Year 9Miss R Povey&Mr A MeddinsThere have been many exciting and interestingevents taking place for Year 9 this year. Pupilshave begun <strong>the</strong>ir GCSE courses in all subjectsand have coped well with <strong>the</strong> challenge this haspresented.Pupils received valuable business advice fromguest speakers in <strong>the</strong> recent Dynamo Project.The Pro<strong>to</strong> Toy Day was a success with some interestingand innovative designs being shown. Itappears <strong>the</strong>re are some budding entrepreneurs inYear 9!There was considerable interest in applying forcourses at Barry College next year. All pupilsperformed very well in <strong>the</strong>ir interviews and thoroughlyenjoyed <strong>the</strong> taster sessions at <strong>the</strong> college.100 pupils also travelled for a fun-filled day <strong>to</strong>Oakwood after receiving <strong>the</strong> most housepoints inYear 9.Many pupils have helped Mr Baldwin with <strong>the</strong>Year 6 transition days and new parents’ evening,as well as Year 7 parents’ evening - all pupilshave been extremely helpful and have represented<strong>the</strong> school with distinction.36 members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> year group have been involvedin <strong>the</strong> excellent Year 8/9 joint production<strong>of</strong> ‘High <strong>School</strong> Musical’.Year 9 students have had many memorable andinspiring visi<strong>to</strong>rs during <strong>the</strong> term. Carol Evansfrom <strong>the</strong> Malarchi Pooncholai Trust spoke <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>year group about an Indian orphanage and followingthis <strong>the</strong> pupils raised enough money <strong>to</strong>sponsor two orphan children. Also, Hannah Williamsfrom <strong>the</strong> Vale Volunteer Bureau spoke <strong>to</strong><strong>the</strong> year group about <strong>the</strong> valuable aspects <strong>of</strong> volunteering- many pupils were subsequently inspired<strong>to</strong> put <strong>the</strong>ir names forward for this. Finally,Godfrey, a Headmaster from Lesotho (seepho<strong>to</strong>) spoke <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> year group in an assemblywhich was a very humbling experience.9TShanice Donovan is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> <strong>Stanwell</strong>Girls’ football team that won <strong>the</strong> leagueand also is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Girls’ basketballteam who are Welsh Champions!Lucy Sharpe has been busy performing in<strong>the</strong> Orbit Theatre production <strong>of</strong> Annie. VerityTucker has passed her modern dancingexams.9EIsaac Dyer is a member <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Cardiff CityDevelopment squad and Sam Jennings is amember <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Swansea City Developmentsquad. Edward Drake has been busy playingfor Penarth Rugby team. Euan Procterhas been regularly attending rock climbing atBolders. Ma<strong>the</strong>w Bennett was a member <strong>of</strong><strong>the</strong> Newport Football Academy team whowon <strong>the</strong>ir league.9ATom Hann powered through a sponsoredcycle ride from Penarth <strong>to</strong> Pontypridd andback - it was for Pedal Power and <strong>the</strong> JohnEllis Tay lending library.
