Media & FilmMr I O’RourkeIt is most satisfying <strong>to</strong> look back on a productiveyear in <strong>the</strong> department; so many thingshave happened and so much has been achieved.Year 9 & 10 students have started <strong>to</strong> becomeconfident media analysts, with two examinationsunder <strong>the</strong>ir belt and some very promisingpieces <strong>of</strong> early coursework – especially <strong>the</strong>irself-devised Comics and Science Fiction ControlledAssessment. This work will be on displayin <strong>the</strong> Autumn Term in time for OpenDay.Year 11 applied <strong>the</strong>mselves throughout <strong>the</strong>year <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> task <strong>of</strong> becoming thoroughly preparedfor <strong>the</strong>ir GCSE examination. This involved<strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> a coursework folderreflecting <strong>the</strong>ir very best work, and sitting awritten examination in June. Outstandingcoursework was produced by Jacqueline Dich,Zac Ghazi-Torbati and Daniel Skentelbery.This year’s paper focused on Music IndustryWebsites and Music Magazines. Both <strong>to</strong>picsstimulated great interest and enthusiasm on <strong>the</strong>part <strong>of</strong> pupils, many <strong>of</strong> whom naturally enjoy<strong>the</strong>se aspects <strong>of</strong> media output in <strong>the</strong>ir personallives.Year 12 seem <strong>to</strong> have relished <strong>the</strong>ir first year<strong>of</strong> A Level study, and have just finished <strong>the</strong>first two <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir four modules. The first modulewas a series <strong>of</strong> coursework pieces thattested <strong>the</strong>ir creative and analytical skills <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>limit and <strong>the</strong> second was a <strong>to</strong>ugh external examthat focused this year on magazines for olderpeople. Students <strong>of</strong> note for coursework excellenceinclude Madeline Lynch, Phoebe Pageand Mikaela Wood.Year 13 have concluded <strong>the</strong>ir two year programme<strong>of</strong> study and we wish <strong>the</strong>m all <strong>the</strong> verybest for <strong>the</strong>ir exam results and future choices.We have seen some <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> most accomplishedcoursework pieces ever from this cohort particularlyfrom Emily Davies, Sam Green andJordan Holt for <strong>the</strong>ir originality and technical“Outstanding coursework was produced”excellence.The department has also been extremely busywith extra-curricular activities this term. This hasincluded <strong>the</strong> production <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> promotional materialfor ‘High <strong>School</strong> Musical,’ with <strong>the</strong> principalpho<strong>to</strong>graphy by Year 13 Media student, KateHumphreys. Members <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> department alsocontinue <strong>to</strong> provide back stage support and assistancefor <strong>the</strong> shows. The department also contributed<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> design and production <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> programmefor <strong>the</strong> <strong>Stanwell</strong> <strong>School</strong> Awards Ceremony.The Media Studies Awards for GCSE and ALevel were won this year by Daniel Skentelbery(Year 11) and Emily Davies (Year 13). Dan hasworked enthusiastically and consistently, producingan outstanding coursework folder, whilstEmily received this year’s A Level Media Prizefor her consistently high standards <strong>of</strong> attainment.Film StudiesIn 2010/2011, a group <strong>of</strong> students began <strong>the</strong> yearstudying for a new A Level in Film Studies and<strong>the</strong>y have recently completed <strong>the</strong> first whole cycle<strong>of</strong> this new subject. Congratulations are due <strong>to</strong>that intrepid first bunch! The standard <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> actualfilmmaking for <strong>the</strong> coursework element hasbeen outstanding within <strong>the</strong> new cohort. In particular,Elis Jones and Alex Van Den Brom haveimpressed.
