Aetiology• The causative agent of White Spot Disease is White Spot SyndromeVirus (WSSV) which is an enveloped, double stranded DNA virus.• In the 8 th report of the International Committee on Taxonomy ofViruses (ICTV) in 2004, WSSV was assigned as the only member of thegenus Whispovirus within the Nimaviridae family. Virions of WSSV areovoid or ellipsoid to Bacilliform in shape, have a regular symmetry, andmeasure 120–150 nm in diameter and 270–290 nm in length. Mostnotable is the thread- or flagella-like extension (appendage) at one endof the virion.WSSV particles in longitudinal and cross section in nucleus, L.vannamei
Susceptible species• All decapod crustaceans (order Decapoda), including shrimps,lobsters and crabs from marine, brackish or freshwaterenvironments, are considered susceptible to infection.
