One-way ANOVA was performed in field experiments with differentletters showing significant differences among treatments.enrichment of Littorella sediments over ca. 200days, but only in the 0.1% organic enrichmentof Lobelia sediments. At the highest 1.6%organic enrichment, sediments remained anoxicbelow 5-6 mm depth. Reestablishment ofoxygenated surface sediments was only partialin higher organic treatments, but it was alwaysstronger in Littorella than Lobelia sediments.DIC concentrations increased 4-7 timesin the organically enriched sediments in thelaboratory as a result of higher organicdegradations rates (Table 1). The increase ofNH 4 + concentrations was even more profound(> 100 times, Table 1). Anoxia inducedextensive anaerobic Fe 3+ reduction resulting inabout 500-1000 times higher Fe 2+concentrations in high-organic (1.6 %) thancontrol sediments (Table 1). Concentrations ofNO 3 - and PO 4 3- were negligible.In field experiments, all added organicmatter had been degraded and lost after 3summer months (Table 1). DIC concentrationswere still significantly higher in sedimentsreceiving 0.2-0.8 % organic matter, and meanconcentrations of NH 4 + and Fe 2+ were alsohigher at 0.8 % organic enrichment, althoughnot significantly relative to control sediments.Sediments without plants had higher pore-water60
