CHAPTER 1IntroductionThis chapter provides a brief description of the <strong>PINpad</strong> <strong>1000SE</strong> peripheral dataentry device. The unit accepts personal identification numbers (PINs) <strong>and</strong>encrypts those numbers for security purposes. PINs are used during transactionsto verify that a customer is authorized to use the offered card.<strong>PINpad</strong> <strong>1000SE</strong>Device BasicsThe <strong>PINpad</strong> <strong>1000SE</strong> unit delivers <strong>and</strong> exp<strong>and</strong>s upon the functionality ofVeriFone’s established <strong>PINpad</strong> 1000 <strong>and</strong> <strong>PINpad</strong> 101 families. This sleek <strong>and</strong>stylish PED-compliant h<strong>and</strong>held device incorporates a broad array ofsophisticated security features to guard against fraud <strong>and</strong> abuse, including fullsupport for 3DES encryption <strong>and</strong> a choice of Master/Session or Derived Key PerTransaction (DUKPT) key-management methods. The <strong>PINpad</strong> <strong>1000SE</strong> alsosupports Message Authentication Code (MAC) to protect debit transaction datafrom accidental or fraudulent tampering during the transfer to its host.Easily connecting with most existing POS terminals or ECRs, the <strong>PINpad</strong> <strong>1000SE</strong>offers a fast, simple, <strong>and</strong> secure way to obtain PIN input for the exp<strong>and</strong>ing rangeof debit, electronic benefits transfer (EBT), <strong>and</strong> other PIN-based transactions.Figure 1The <strong>PINpad</strong> <strong>1000SE</strong> peripheral data entry deviceThe <strong>PINpad</strong> <strong>1000SE</strong> device connects to a controller, or master device, such as aTRANZ or OMNI transaction terminal, or other microcomputer-based system.
