As he could not read newspapersand could not see what was going on around him he had torely on second-hand news. The front was crumbling, thearmy was retreating, army headquarters were of one mindwith the civil authorities of the Reich that peace must beconcluded with all despatch.The cobblestones of Pasewalk resounded with the rumbleof heavy lorries and soldiers‟ shouts pierced its quietude. Thesailors from Kiel arrived and spread the news that the navyhad hoisted the red flag. Through the closed windows ofthe hospital a song filtered into the rooms but it was not Germany‟snational anthem. The guard no longer stood onthe Rhine and the sailors shouted at the top of their voicesthat the world will be international. What was going on inthe world, Hitler wondered. What did the sailors mean thatthe past should be eradicated and that the world should rallyits forces for a new struggle?Did it mean that the navy would join the army in an effortto repulse the enemy? Why were the wards so excited?The blind man could not see his sick companions‟ faces.They did not sound very depressed, so the situation could notbe quite hopeless.
