CHAPTER III.THE T O W N G O E S B O L S H E V I S TF there had not been so much sunshine in Bavaria in theIspring of 1919 Adolf Hitler might be today a commonlabourer in the suburb of Munich. Because of the sunshinepeople liked to linger in the streets, and once they werein the streets they started revolutions which were responsiblefor the counter-revolution on the waves of which Hitler rodeto fame.Tattered and famished, the soldiers were streaming backfrom the fronts, ready to receive the benefits of a new millennium.For years they had suffered unutterable privationin the trenches and now their turn came to be pampered andpetted. At every street corner of Munich they were remindedthat they were heroes and were entitled to the gratitude ofthe fatherland. The question was what form this gratitudeshould take?While waiting for the gratification of their most secretdreams, the heroes took long walks between the Karlstor andthe Marienplatz. There all the political theories of the daywere on public display, passions and perversities were exhibited.In one beer-cellar – because the weary soldier neededrefreshment – a young man from the plainland was holdingforth against the Prussian monster. His words glowed with
