156 CHAPTER 3 ■ DATABASE ADMINISTRATIONCompressing Network DataNetwork or standby server failures can prevent redo log data from being transported to a standbyserver when you’re using Data Guard. Oracle will automatically synchronize the redo databetween the primary and secondary servers after the resolution of the failure. This synchronizationprocess, also called a redo gap resolution, can prove to be time-consuming if the database has totransmit a large amount of redo data over the network. Oracle Advanced Compression compressesthe redo data that needs to be transmitted over the network, thus increasing the throughputof the redo gap resolution process. Oracle estimates that compression enhances high availabilityby helping synchronize the standby database up to two times faster with compressedredo data.For more on the compression of redo data during a redo gap resolution, please refer toChapter 6.Enterprise Manager New FeaturesThere are several changes in Oracle Database 11g Enterprise Manager Database Control regardingdatabase administration tasks. We’ll show you the main new features in Enterprise Manager inthis section. We discuss the new performance-related Enterprise Manager features in Chapter 4.In Oracle Enterprise Manager 10g, you had only three main tabs on the database homepage: Performance, Administration, and Maintenance. In Oracle Enterprise Manager 11g, youhave the following tabs:• Performance: The customizable Performance tab lets you view session performancedetails as well as memory, disk, and CPU utilization. Chapter 4 discusses the new performancepages in detail.• Availability: This tab helps you manage backup and recovery, including Oracle SecureBackup.• Server: This tab helps you manage storage, configuration, security, the query optimizer,the Oracle Scheduler, and the Resource Manager.• Schema: This tab lets you manage database objects and perform change management.• Data Movement: This tab covers Data Pump export and import, Streams, and advancedreplication.• Software and Support: This tab helps you manage software configuration and patching,the Deployment Procedure Manager, and Real Application Testing. We explained howto use most of these features in Chapter 1.In the following sections, we outline some of the key new features in Oracle EnterpriseManager 11g.
CHAPTER 3 ■ DATABASE ADMINISTRATION 157The Availability TabYou can perform back and recovery tasks, including using Oracle Secure Backup, from theAvailability tab. The Availability tab has two major sections, Backup/Recovery and OracleSecure Backup. The Backup/Recovery section has two sections, Setup and Manage. Click theView and Manage Transactions link in the Manage section to access the LogMiner tool. TheLogMiner tool lets you browse transactions by time or an SCN range. You can query results byrecord or transaction basis.The LogMiner tool is integrated with the Oracle Database 11g flashback transaction feature.LogMiner shows all dependent transactions, and it can undo an entire transaction, includingits dependent transactions.The Server TabThe Server tab includes sections such as Storage, Database Configuration (initialization parameters),Security, Oracle Scheduler, Statistics Management, and Resource Manager. You’ll findthe Oracle Scheduler on the Server tab. A new addition to the Oracle Scheduler links is theAutomated Maintenance Tasks tab, which lets you enable, disable, and configure the threeautomated maintenance tasks in Oracle Database 11g: Optimizer Statistics Gathering, SegmentAdvisor, and Automatic SQL Tuning. Figure 3-1 shows the Automated Maintenance Tasks page.Figure 3-1.
