<strong>Guidelines</strong> on the Prevention and Control of Tuberculosis in Ireland 2010HSE/HPSCForewordTuberculosis remains a significant cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. In 2008, an estimated 8.9to 9.9 million new cases and 1.7 million deaths were reported globally. In Ireland, the incidence of TBhas fallen significantly from a high of 230 notifications per 100,000 population in 1952 when records firstbegan to a low of 9.7 per 100,000 in 2001. The incidence has remained relatively stable since then with arate of 11.3 per 100,000 in 2007 and an incidence rate of 8.0/100,000 in the indigenous Irish populationin 2007.The HIV epidemic has had a significant impact on TB rates globally as individuals with TB and HIVinfection are more likely to develop active TB disease during their lifetime than those who are HIVnegative. Drug resistance, including multidrug-resistant TB and extensively drug-resistant TB togetherwith the increasing number of TB-HIV co-infected patients is also challenging TB control. The WorldHealth Organization proposes to reduce the global incidence of active TB to less than 1 case per millionpopulation by 2050 and thus eliminate TB as a global public health problem. This offers a challenge toimprove TB control in Ireland.The first guidelines for the management and control of TB in Ireland were published in 1996. All thesections from the original guidelines have been updated and a new section on infection prevention andcontrol has been added.
