Students willlearn how to conceptualize ideas, communicate thoseideas visually as thumbnails, interact with an editor<strong>and</strong> change those images as needed, execute theillustration <strong>and</strong> learn the basics <strong>of</strong> digital productionsuch as scanning, coloring <strong>and</strong> printing. Materials willfocus primarily on traditional pen <strong>and</strong> ink or graphitewith computer coloring. Prerequisite: Basic drawingskills. Some previous experience in Photoshop is a plus.Jonathan Hill graduated as valedictorian from the Savannah<strong>College</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> & Design in 2003 with a BFA in Sequential <strong>Art</strong>.Since then he’s worked as a freelance illustrator <strong>and</strong> cartoonist inPortl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>Oregon</strong>. Some <strong>of</strong> his clients include Willamette Week,Hollywood Video, the Spokane Inl<strong>and</strong>er, the Vietnam LiteratureProject, the Asian Reporter <strong>and</strong> Powell’s City <strong>of</strong> Books.His work has appeared in the second volume <strong>of</strong> the acclaimedBEASTS! book published by Fantagraphics, as well as anthologiespublished by Image Comics, Three Rivers, <strong>and</strong> Tugboat Press.His first graphic novel, a collaboration with author MK Reedtitled Americus, was published in fall 2011 by First SecondBooks <strong>and</strong> has been picked as an ABC New Voices title <strong>and</strong>nominated for a YALSA Best Graphic Novel for Teens 2012.An Inventive Approach (Part One)Alternative Painting SurfacesELIZABETH MALASKA1 DAY WORKSHOP • DR702M T W T F S S • MAR 9; 9:00AM-4:00PMTUITION: $100; STUDIO FEE: $20EARLY REGISTRATION TUITION (DEADLINE 1/15): $70In these t<strong>and</strong>em workshops, designed to be takenindividually or as a pair, students will investigate amyriad <strong>of</strong> tactics for making supports for <strong>paint</strong>ings,drawing, <strong>and</strong> collages (Part One), <strong>and</strong>/or explorenovel approaches to the creation <strong>of</strong> images withdifferent drawing <strong>and</strong> <strong>paint</strong>ing mediums (Part Two).Alternative Painting Surfaces will be devoted tocreating substrates. Participants will look at supports—canvas,linen, panel, paper, board, foundmaterials—as well as the many unique ways inwhich these surfaces can be prepared to receivemarks. Demonstrations will include, but not belimited to: gessoes (traditional <strong>and</strong> non-traditionalrabbits skin based preparations, chalk-based homemadegesso, store-bought acrylic <strong>and</strong> oil-basedvarieties), staining, gilding, layering, as well asmodern updates <strong>and</strong> additions to traditional materials.Prerequisites: Willingness to experiment. Students will explore the properties<strong>of</strong> different mediums in order to underst<strong>and</strong> howto effectively break the rules. Further investigationswill include unusual mark making tools as wellas unconventional combinations <strong>of</strong> materials <strong>and</strong>application, including taking two dimensions intothree, <strong>and</strong> vice versa. Prerequisites: Willingnessto experiment. Some familiarity with <strong>paint</strong>ing <strong>and</strong>drawing is helpful but beginners are welcome.Elizabeth Malaska is a Portl<strong>and</strong> native but has lived <strong>and</strong>traveled extensively throughout Europe <strong>and</strong> America in pursuit<strong>of</strong> her art. She has exhibited in San Francisco, New York <strong>and</strong>Rome. She is the recipient <strong>of</strong> awards to study <strong>and</strong> teach at Astoria’sClatsop Community <strong>College</strong>, the <strong>Art</strong> Farm in Nebraska<strong>and</strong> at Caldera, outside <strong>of</strong> Sisters, <strong>Oregon</strong>. Her large-scale<strong>paint</strong>ings combine traditional <strong>and</strong> innovative techniques to createimages that examine art history <strong>and</strong> the implications <strong>of</strong> thefemale body as the subject <strong>of</strong> the artist’s gaze.Photo Transfer Techniques for PaintersJEFFREY T.
