AC+D VISITING ARTISTS LECTURE SERIESIMAGES LEFT: IRIS EICHENBERG | RIGHT: PEARL FRYARMFA Applied <strong>Craft</strong> + DesignVISITING ARTISTS WINTER/SPRING 2013LECTURE SERIESAmos Kennedy | December 12Mr. Kennedy is a letterpress printer, paper<strong>make</strong>r <strong>and</strong> builder <strong>of</strong> artist’s books based in Gordo, Alabama.He quit his corporate computer programming job at the age <strong>of</strong> 40 to follow his dream <strong>of</strong> becominga letterpress artist, or as he calls himself, “humble negro printer.” His work embodies his passion for stirringup strong emotions <strong>and</strong> encouraging people to think in previously unexplored ways. He is the subject <strong>of</strong> thedocumentary Proceed <strong>and</strong> Be Bold. Co-sponsored with PNCA Printmaking Department.Hazel Clark | January 23Ms. Clark is Research Chair <strong>of</strong> Fashion at the School <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong> <strong>and</strong> Design History <strong>and</strong> Theory at Parsons,<strong>and</strong> former head <strong>of</strong> the Swire School <strong>of</strong> Design at Hong Kong Polytechnic University. She was one <strong>of</strong>the first graduates in Britain to be awarded a PhD in the History <strong>of</strong> Design, <strong>and</strong> has since published <strong>and</strong>taught internationally, with a particular interest in design <strong>and</strong> cultural identity <strong>and</strong> a focus on fashion <strong>and</strong>textiles. Co-sponsored with OCAC Fibers.Pearl Fryar | February 20Mr. Fryar is a sculptor who uses live plant material to create original, elegantly abstract forms <strong>of</strong> topiary. Heis self-taught <strong>and</strong> as such has taken risks <strong>and</strong> developed techniques outside the normal bounds <strong>of</strong> horticulture.He is not afraid to try new things <strong>and</strong> has been said to “tame trees” with his unique techniques.Born the son <strong>of</strong> a sharecropper in rural North Carolina, he has overcome substantial obstacles through aposition <strong>of</strong> selfless giving. Co-sponsored with PNCA GFA.Iris Eichenberg | March 20Ms. Eichenberg is <strong>Art</strong>ist-in-Residence <strong>and</strong> Head <strong>of</strong> Metalsmithing at Cranbrook Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>, <strong>and</strong>has worked as an independent artist <strong>and</strong> art educator, a part-time curator <strong>and</strong> co-organizer <strong>of</strong> artrelatedevents. She has given numerous workshops in Europe, Asia, Africa <strong>and</strong> North America. She hasreceived numerous grants, awards <strong>and</strong> residencies in Europe <strong>and</strong> North America. Her work can be foundin museums in Europe <strong>and</strong> the US, including the Stedelijk Museum <strong>and</strong> the Fondation National d’<strong>Art</strong>Contemporain. Co-sponsored with OCAC Metals.Allyson Mitchell | April 10Ms. Mitchell is a maximalist artist working predominantly in sculpture, installation <strong>and</strong> film. Since 1997, shehas been melding feminism <strong>and</strong> pop culture to play with contemporary ideas about sexuality, autobiography,<strong>and</strong> the body, largely through the use <strong>of</strong> reclaimed textile <strong>and</strong> ab<strong>and</strong>oned craft. Her work has exhibited ingalleries <strong>and</strong> festivals across Canada, the US, Europe <strong>and</strong> East Asia. She is an assistant pr<strong>of</strong>essor in theSchool <strong>of</strong> Women’s Studies at York University.
