Each image will be one print in agroup portfolio. At the end <strong>of</strong> the workshop,each student will have a portfolio containingthe prints from the class. Examples <strong>of</strong> woodengraving prints <strong>and</strong> prints from the instructor’scollection will be presented <strong>and</strong> discussed.Prerequisite: None, all skill levels are welcome!Susan Lowdermilk creates artist books <strong>and</strong> limited editionprints, primarily creating woodcuts, wood engravings <strong>and</strong>etchings. She has been teaching printmaking, book binding <strong>and</strong>graphic design courses at Lane Community <strong>College</strong>’s <strong>Art</strong> <strong>and</strong>Applied Design Department in Eugene, <strong>Oregon</strong> for fifteenyears. Her artist books can be found in numerous public collectionsworldwide <strong>and</strong> her artwork is represented in galleriesthroughout the United States. She earned her MFA from theUniversity <strong>of</strong> <strong>Oregon</strong> in Eugene <strong>and</strong> her BFA from ColoradoState University in Fort Collins, Colorado.Power <strong>of</strong> the PamphletCLARE CARPENTER2 DAY WORKSHOP • BA703M T W T F S S • APR 13-14; 9:00AM-4:00PMTUITION: $165; STUDIO FEE: $20EARLY REGISTRATION TUITION (DEADLINE 1/15): $135This two-day class explores the artistic potential<strong>of</strong> the pamphlet book. Though <strong>of</strong>ten overlookedin favor <strong>of</strong> flashier structures, the pamphlet’sstraightforward qualities provide an opportunityfor content <strong>and</strong> details to shine. On day one,students will explore the range <strong>of</strong> this simplestructure by learning several folded <strong>and</strong> sewnpamphlet variations with s<strong>of</strong>t covers. Variousfolds, mixed paper sizes <strong>and</strong> alternate sewingadd interest <strong>and</strong> detail, <strong>and</strong> methods <strong>of</strong>adding content will be discussed. On daytwo, students will learn a technique to bind apamphlet-stitched book into a hard case. Alongthe way there will be presentations <strong>of</strong> work <strong>and</strong>discussions about books that use the pamphletstructure. Students will complete the class with avariety <strong>of</strong> finished structures. Prerequisite: NoneClare Carpenter is a letterpress printer <strong>and</strong> print<strong>make</strong>r inPortl<strong>and</strong>, <strong>Oregon</strong>. She also serves as the Book <strong>Art</strong>s StudioManager for OCAC.
