their creative process by adding drawing <strong>and</strong><strong>paint</strong>ing materials to their collage. The class willemphasize creativity, experimentation, risk <strong>and</strong>accident with the idea that they are importantelements in creating art. The use <strong>of</strong> a widevariety <strong>of</strong> both conventional <strong>and</strong> unconventionalmethods <strong>and</strong> materials will be explored duringeach class time. The last class assignment willallow students to work in three-dimensionalsculpture if they wish. Students will be encouragedto push their collage to new intellectual <strong>and</strong>aesthetic levels. The class will be a dynamic <strong>and</strong>inspiring opportunity for students to push theircreative abilities to a new level. Prerequisite:None, but familiarity with basic art practices ishelpful.Cynthia Lahti uses a variety <strong>of</strong> materials <strong>and</strong> techniquesto create artworks that explore the recesses <strong>of</strong> myth <strong>and</strong>mystery. She is best known for her surprising combination<strong>of</strong> images created in figurative works <strong>of</strong> collage, drawing<strong>and</strong> sculpture. In her art, Cynthia uses her imaginativecreativity to experiment with the language <strong>of</strong> symbols <strong>and</strong>metaphor. Her working process encourages curiosity <strong>and</strong>experimentation while finding inspiration in art history<strong>and</strong> personal nostalgia. Cynthia shows locally at PDXContemporary <strong>Art</strong> Gallery <strong>and</strong> has been included in numerousnational shows. Instruction will be given on makingflat felt, cords <strong>and</strong> both hollow <strong>and</strong> solid formsas a foundation for building methods used increating both functional <strong>and</strong> sculptural pieces.Demonstration on mixed media approaches <strong>of</strong>using felt, such as incorporating found objects<strong>and</strong> embedding other fibers <strong>and</strong> fabrics into thewool to create new textures will also be presented.This experimental workshop invites youto explore the tactile <strong>and</strong> transformative media<strong>of</strong> felt making. Prerequisite: NoneTricia Stackle lives <strong>and</strong> works in Seattle, Washington. Inspiredby simple, shapes <strong>and</strong> tactile materials, she is both an artist <strong>and</strong>educator committed to rethinking the way people live with <strong>and</strong>relate to art <strong>and</strong> design. Using wool felt as her primary medium,she <strong>make</strong>s clothing, home textiles, sculpture, furniture <strong>and</strong> photography.Its diverse applications <strong>and</strong> sophisticated characteristics<strong>make</strong> it well suited for her studio explorations. Stackle earned acertificate in Fiber <strong>Art</strong> from the University <strong>of</strong> Washington <strong>and</strong>recently completed an MFA in Fiber <strong>and</strong> Material Studies fromCranbrook Academy <strong>of</strong> <strong>Art</strong>. To complement her studio practice,she has been teaching studio art for ten years to people <strong>of</strong>all ages.
