school transportationHow does a parent/guardian learn if a child is eligiblefor transportation services?The Transportation Department will send a letter to all studentsidentifying their bus stop if they are eligible for transportationservices, or that will be notified that they live in a“no-transportation zone”.A parent/guardian may either:• Check the school system website’s Transportation Link to seeif a bus is assigned for their address• Contact the Transportation Office at 301-952-6570• Contact the schoolWe live within the no transportation zone, but are veryclose to a bus stop for my child’s school. May my childride the bus from the stop?Students are not permitted to ride a school bus if he/she iswithin the no transportation zone.The bus didn’t show up on time for my child. How longshould he/she wait at the bus stop?Your child should arrive at the bus stop at least ten minutesbefore the arrival time of the bus. If there is a substitutedriver, pick-up times may not be consistent with the regulartime period. Wait 15 minutes after the scheduled pick-upthen contact the Bus Lot Foreman at the area bus lot or theTransportation Office at 301-952-6570.24What should be done if there is a transportationrelatedproblem after office hours?If there is a problem after regular office hours, call <strong>School</strong>Security at (301) 499-7000. <strong>School</strong> Security is on duty 24 hours– 7 days a week. <strong>School</strong> Security will contact the TransportationSupervisor to handle any type of school bus issue(s).Why are buses sometimes late?<strong>School</strong> bus drivers can have the same reasons for being lateas any commuter. For example, there may be traffic delays,weather conditions, accidents, mechanical break- downs, orred light malfunctions. Or, a driver may call in sick, requiring asubstitute driver. Additionally, bus drivers make multiple runs,so when a bus is late, it will probably continue to be late for allof its runs.Why aren’t seat belts required on school buses?The US Department of Transportation has determined thatcompartmentalization was a better solution than seat beltsbecause it is more manageable, works well for one, two or threestudents per seat, and is most affordable.
