EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM OFFERINGSWhat are Specialty Programs?Sometimes referred to as Magnet Programs, Specialty Programsare unique educational programs offered at specific locationsaround the county. While they serve a broad attendance area,admission is typically by application and some programs may havemore specific eligibility requirements, particularly at the uppergrade levels. Some examples of specialty programs are FrenchImmersion, TAG, Montessori, Biotechnology, Biomedical, and Visualand Performing Arts.How do I enroll my child for a Specialty Program?Admission to the specialty programs is available by application.Each year, the county conducts a program showcase, typically inJanuary, which highlights the programs that will be available forthe following year. In addition to information made available on thePGCPS Web Page and at the showcase, program brochures andapplications are also made available at schools and libraries. Anon-line application is also available. After the application period hasclosed, participants are selected on the basis of a random lottery,and are notified of the program they have been selected for, if theyare on a wait list, or if they were not placed.What is my “Neighborhood <strong>School</strong>”?A “Neighborhood <strong>School</strong>” is that school which serves your child’sgrade level based on your residence. Neighborhood schools servegrades kindergarten through grade 12 and special permission mustbe obtained to attend a different school. The neighborhood schooland the specialty permission may be obtained by applying for astudent transfer, participating in a qualifying special education orEnglish Language Learner (ELL) program, or be being admitted toa specialty or charter school program. Specialty programs’ schoolsare assigned based on the parent/legal guardian home address.Go to the webpage http://schools.pgcps.org/<strong>School</strong>Finder/findschool2.asp to identify program locations serving yourresidence.My family is new to <strong>Prince</strong> George’s <strong>County</strong> but my childattended a public specialty/charter school in our previousschool district. Will my child automatically be able toenroll in a school here?No. You cannot transfer your enrollment to a charter school. Youmust go through the application process. You may be able totransfer your enrollment to a specialty programs. Please contact301-952-6010 for further information.If my child is admitted to a Specialty Program, willtransportation be available?Depending on the program and age of the child, transportation maybe available on a limited basis. Contact the specialty school formore information.I applied for two or more of my children for the sameprogram. Will all my children receive placement?If lottery applicants are identified as members of the same family,some consideration will be given. However, placement is notguaranteed for all family members. Placements are determinedby space availability at each grade level as well as lottery results.Please make sure the same responsible adult name is used onall applications and all parties reside in the same household. Placement locations are based on the parent/legal guardian’shome address. This information is obtained from the student’s IDnumber.I applied for two programs for my child; one is my firstchoice and the other is my second choice? What happens if Iget my second choice first?Both choices are treated equally, however, if selected, you will onlyreceive placement for one program. If you choose to decline yoursecond choice, you may request to be placed on the waiting list forthe first option.58
