HEALTH SERVICESWhat health concerns about my child should I sharewith the school nurse?Please contact the school nurse if your child has a healthconcern and/or a medical condition. The school nurse is thehealth care professional who assists students in managingboth chronic and acute health conditions, treats emergencies,administers medications, conducts screenings and serves as aresource for health information.When should I keep my child home from school?The goal is to keep students healthy and ready to learn. Sickchildren should be kept home from school. Resting at home willhelp them get better more quickly and will prevent them fromexposing other children or staff to their illness. Please see the<strong>Parent</strong> Fact Sheet on the parent page of the school system’sweb page.What should I do if I do not have health insurance?If you do not have health insurance please share thisinformation with the school nurse who can assist you, or callthe <strong>Prince</strong> George’s <strong>County</strong> Health Department’s Healthline at1-888-561-4049.What if my child needs to take medicine at school?If it is necessary for a child to take a medicine at school,parents must provide a Prescriber’s Medication Order formsigned by the prescriber and parent.<strong>Parent</strong>s must notify the school nurse in advance when sendingmedicines to school with the student. Controlled substances(such as but not limited to Ritalin and Codeine) must be broughtto school by a responsible adult. The possession of prescriptionor over the counter medicine without authorization from aschool nurse is a level IV violation of the Code of StudentConduct.<strong>Parent</strong>s should send medicine to school in the originalpharmacy bottle, not in a bag or an envelope. The bottle musthave a pharmacy label with:• The child’s name• The prescriber’s name• The name of the medicine• How much and when to give the medicineThe prescriber’s medication forms can be downloaded from thehealth services web page.28If you have additional questions, please contact the schoolnurse.
