STUDENT SUPPORT SERVICESWho is a homeless student and which school can theyattend?A child who lacks a fixed, regular, and adequate nighttimeresidence is eligible for homeless services. The child may livein a shelter, a temporary home, a motel, a car, a campground,or on the street. Homeless children may be “doubled-up” withrelatives or friends due to a loss of housing, economic hardship,or a similar reason.A homeless student can attend the school that serves theaddress where the student is temporarily living, or the studentmay continue to attend the school that he/she attended priorto becoming homeless (the school of origin). The student canstay in the school for as long as the student is homeless or untilthe end of the school year, if the student receives permanenthousing.Are services available through the Homeless EducationProgram?Yes. We can help with school records, school materials, schoolmeal programs, and special education services. We can alsohelp with food, clothing, and medical assistance by providingreferral information. We may also be able to help with tutoring.Fee waivers may be available for field trips and other schoolrelated activities.How do I receive services?Meet with your child’s Professional <strong>School</strong> Counselor or theschool-based Homeless Liaison for assistance with completinga “Homeless Student Services” form.How often do I have to complete a “Homeless StudentServices” form?<strong>Parent</strong>s must complete a new “Homeless Student Services”form every year if they continue to be homeless. A new formmust be completed each time there is a change of address.How can I get additional information about theHomeless Education Program?For additional information contact the Homeless EducationOffice at 301-925-2482.How can I get a sign language interpreter for a schoolmeeting?<strong>Parent</strong>s may ask their school to submit a request for AmericanSign Language interpreters. Professional Interpreter Exchange,Inc. (PIE) provides interpreters for <strong>Prince</strong> George’s <strong>County</strong><strong>Public</strong> <strong>School</strong>s. Requests should be made at least five daysbefore the meeting.46
