PUPIL PERSONNEL SERVICESWhat is a Pupil Personnel Worker (PPW)?A Pupil Personnel Worker is a highly trained state certifiedspecialist with a minimum of a Master’s degree. PPWs serveas advocates for your child. They help remove barriers andcircumstances that impact student achievement. PPWs assistschools with attendance, discipline, residency, counselingand crisis intervention. They provide a link between schools,parents, students, and the community.How does the Pupil Personnel Worker (PPW) work inschools?• Serve as a resource to support school teams such as theIndividual Educational Plan Team (IEPT), <strong>School</strong> InstructionalTeam (SIT), Supplemental Services Team (SST), and Section504Team• Are a resource to parents and school administrators tointerpret <strong>Prince</strong> George’s <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>School</strong> policies andprocedures• Assist parents and schools with concerns about students’attendance and discipline• Review short term suspensions at the request of the parent• Have knowledge of federal and state laws and <strong>Prince</strong>George’s <strong>County</strong> <strong>Public</strong> <strong>School</strong> policies and procedures toensure due process is provided for all students• Make referrals to Interagency Council and the court systemto address truancy• Provide case management for students requiringinterventions such as special education, alternativeplacements, and referral to community agencies• Serve as the Superintendent’s designee for investigating andresolving long term suspension requests36Pupil Personnel Worker work in schools CONTINUED:• Investigate, prepare, and submit documentation forExpulsion Requests• Provide professional development to staff• Provide crisis intervention support to the schoolsWhen should I contact my child’s Pupil PersonnelWorker?Contact the Pupil Personnel Worker through your child’sschool office. Contact the PPW:• When you need an explanation of the Code of StudentConduct• When you have questions about our attendance andabsence policy• When you have questions regarding student records,withdrawal, and other school system’s administrative policyand procedures• When you need a review of your child’s short termsuspension• When you need referrals for your child/family to outsideagencies• When your child has excessive unexcused absences• When you need assistance in getting academic help foryour child• When the principal requests an expulsion• When your child’s behavior changes and therefore poses asa barrier to learning• When your child has a history of frequent behavior referrals• When the principal requests a long term suspension• When you need a neutral link to the school
