Compressed Air Market Assessmentcompressors. These machines are generally used to drive small- andmedium-sized systems. Other manufacturers control large shares of themarket for centrifugal compressors, which are more often used topower larger systems. The fact that the selection group did not containdistributors for manufacturers with varying specialties and target marketsshould be kept in mind when interpreting the findings of the distributorassessment.Assessment ImplementationTo pretest the effectiveness of the assessment, 6 samples were distributedto dealers at an early project meeting. The assessment was then mailedout to all 204 distributors by XENERGY, Inc., with a cover letter fromCompressed Air Challenge ® describing the research project. However, only 42 completed assessments were received. Therefore, the evaluationwas converted to telephone format and administered by XENERGY staffto the remaining vendors. XENERGY staff also conducted telephoneinterviews with representatives of 3 Ingersoll-Rand air centers, whichare manufacturer-owned distributorships. Another reason to add theIngersoll-Rand air centers to the interviewing group was to capture theexperience of distributors for larger capacity equipment, including centrifugalcompressors. The patterns of response from the Ingersoll-Randcenters were not entirely consistent with one another and followed thedistribution of responses from the larger group of independent distributors. The results of the Ingersoll-Rand assessments were therefore combinedwith those from the larger group for the analysis.
