After a first preparatory year, during which<br />
the new team familiarised itself with its tasks and<br />
set up the necessary procedures and routines, the<br />
Secretariat now feels fully operational, able and<br />
willing to cope with its many and far from trivial<br />
duties. It is hoped that in the months to come the<br />
contacts with the general membership, and also<br />
with the Commissions and other organisms of our<br />
Organisation, can be rebuilt and intensified. Considerable<br />
attention is devoted, in particular, to the<br />
design and updating of the <strong>OPTIMA</strong> Web page,<br />
an instrument of which, we hope, the members<br />
will mak good and frequent use. Visit us soon at<br />

DEATHS<br />
Sadly, we have to report the demise of several<br />
<strong>OPTIMA</strong> members, well known within and far<br />
beyond our Organisation. We apologise for possible<br />
omissions in this list.<br />
Rodolfo Pichi Sermolli, Italy, died 22 April 2005.<br />
Suzette Puech, France, died 3 February 2006.<br />
Dimitrios Babalonas, Greece, died 14 March 2006.<br />
Max Dübendorfer-Derrer, Switzeralnd, died 5 April 2006.<br />
Pierre Broussalis, Turkey, died in August 2006.<br />
Günther Kunkel, Spain, died 4 September 2007.<br />

2004. The Herbarium Mediterraneum published<br />
the 14th volume of Flora Mediterranea,<br />
which was distributed to the regular members of<br />
<strong>OPTIMA</strong> free of charge. Volume 17 of Bocconea<br />
on the III Iter Mediterraneum to Sicily in 1990 was<br />
also published.<br />
2005. The Herbarium Mediterraneum published<br />
the 15th volume of Flora Mediterranea,<br />
which was distributed to the regular members of<br />
<strong>OPTIMA</strong> free of charge. Volume 18 of Bocconea,<br />
entitled, “Identification key and description of<br />
mediterranean maquis litter micro-fungi”, by M.<br />
Pasqualetti, was also published.<br />
2006. The Herbarium Mediterraneum published<br />
the 16th volume of Flora Mediterranea, which<br />
was distributed to the regular members of <strong>OPTIMA</strong><br />
free of charge. Volume 19 of Bocconea, entitled<br />
“Proceedings of the VI Conference on Plant Taxonomy<br />
Alghero, 31 May – 2 June 2003”, was also<br />
published.The Commission met in Pisa (2007).<br />
In 2007 and 2008 the Herbarium Mediterraneum<br />
published the 17th and 18th volume of Flora<br />
Mediterranea, which were distributed to the regular<br />
members of <strong>OPTIMA</strong> free of charge. Volume<br />
20 of Bocconea, entitled “A catalogue of plants<br />
growing in Sicily”, and volume 21, entitled “Proceedings<br />
of the XI <strong>OPTIMA</strong> Meeting Beograd, 5-<br />
11 September 2004”, were also published.<br />
Publication of the <strong>Newsletter</strong> is being resumed<br />
in 2009, in electronic format for distribution<br />
to the membership and in a low number of hard<br />
copies (150), for archival purposes and distribution<br />
to Institutional Members. Personal members<br />
may purchase the <strong>Newsletter</strong> for an extra 5 €.<br />
