Fewer than 2,500 historic places currently bear this nationaldistinction (National Parks Service).Harmony is recognized as the first home of the Harmonie Society. More than 50 principal structureswere built by the society in the district between 1805 and 1814. The town was laid out around a centralsquare that remains today. The Harmonie Society was one of the most successful early Americancommunal groups, with its high degree of commercialization and the important role it played in thedevelopment of western PennsylvaniaThe Harmony Museum is located within the Harmony National Historic Landmark District. Themuseum interprets all periods of the areas history, including relics from the days of the Harmonie Society.Tours of the site are available Tuesday through Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m (Historic Harmony,2001).Table 5-2.
