Typically, the SZ rank appliesto a non-breeding population in the subnation -- for example,birds on migration. An SZ rank may in a few instances alsoapply to a breeding population, for example certain Lepidopterawhich regularly die out every year with no significant returnmigration. Although the SZ rank typically applies to migrants, itshould not be used indiscriminately. Just because a species is onmigration does not mean it receives an SZ rank.
