CHILDREN AND YOUNG
PEOPLE’S WORKFORCE –
CACHE DIPLOMA LEVEL 3
THE COURSE
This is the new, Level 3 qualification
for working with children and young
people. Combining academic with
practical placement in workplace
settings, you will attend college three
days per week and spend two days
in a variety of placements, where you
will be observed working with children
under natural work conditions. You
will have the use of a virtual learning
environment to access resources,
share good practice and complete
online tasks. You will gather together
a portfolio of evidence to complete
the course.
Your learning will include:
• child learning and development
• child welfare and safeguarding
• working with babies and young
children
• home-based childcare
• supporting children with additional
needs
• working with families and parents.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
You must have a Cache Level 2
Certificate for the Children and Young
People’s Workforce (QCF) full Level 2
qualification and three GCSE passes
including English or others with written
assessment.
PROGRESSION
You should be able to gain employment
as an early years’ practitioner in a range
of childcare settings. Students may also
progress onto the Sector Endorsed
Foundation Degree in Early Years.

CHILDREN’S PLAY, LEARNING
AND DEVELOPMENT –
BTEC NATIONAL DIPLOMA
LEVEL 3
THE COURSE
This is a new qualification offered at
Stockton Riverside College and will build
and develop the necessary practical skills
and understanding to provide you with
a firm grounding in the principles of
children’s care for progression into
employment or higher level education.
Work experience and links to the
workplace form a central part of this,
which is equivalent to three A Levels.
800 hours work experience are required.
Your learning will include:
• opportunities to develop your
research and analytical skills
• a wide range of specialist units,
developed in consultation with
employers
• the essential skills, knowledge and
understanding in children’s play
learning and development.
This can be put with CYPW Diploma
for occupational competence.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Four grade C passes at GCSE,
which must include English and
Mathematics/Science and an
interview with two satisfactory
references. Other qualifications
may be acceptable and will be
dealt with on an individual basis.
PROGRESSION
Most of our students aspire to go to
higher education and have recently
gained places at Northumbria University,
Durham University and Teesside
University to train as primary school
teachers or study early childhood
studies and nursing. Employment
opportunities might be paediatric
nursing, social work, primary teaching
or as an early years’ practitioner.
