As in previousyears, the competition attracted notjust professional photographers but alsoamateurs working in conjunction with localnewspapers and websites or living inSilesia. The jury, made up of among others,prof. Marian Oslislo - Chairman, Headof the Department of Graphic Design at theAcademy of Fine Arts in Katowice; prof. JanMalicki – Director of the Silesian Library,representatives of the The Czech RepublicJournalists' Syndicate in Ostrava, and theUnion of Polish Art-Photographers, chose159 images from 30 authors to qualify forthe competiton itself.This year's entries, as always addressedan amazing diversity of topics. Photographersfocused mainly on political, sportsand social events, capturing places closeto us, such as : Czestochowa, Ruda Śląska,Dąbrowa Górnicza, Jaworzno, Chorzów,Piekary Śląskie, Zabrze, Gliwice and Katowice.The jury selected winners from artists ofwhat can widely be termed as Silesia (theprovinces of Silesia, Lower Silesia, Opoleand Moravia-Silesian and Olomouc regionsof the Czech Republic). We found out whothey were on 20 March 2014, during theawards presentation ceremony.The first prize was awarded to GrzegorzCelejewski, a longtime photojournalist for”Gazeta Wyborcza”, for his series of photosshowing young people at a parkour rally (atype of city-scape obstacle race) in Katowice.Second prize went to Marcin Urbanowicz,a freelancer, for a series of photosentitled ”The Mystery of Bells,” a vivid portraitof the Felczynski foundry which producesbells using 200-year old Renaissancetechniques. Third place was taken by DariuszHermiersz, a photojournalist specialisingin sports for ”Fight Club.” The winnermanaged to capture on camera an amazingsplit-second moment of a match betweenGornik Zabrze and Polonia Warszawa.
