PLANNER PROGRAM

(CFP) Program is an international recognized
pr ofessi onal designat ion that is ad ministe red
by the Financial Standards Council of Canada
(FPSCC). The requirements to become a CFP
involves the completion of the required course
m a t e r i a l , s u c c e s s f u l l y p a s s i n g t h e
a cc re di t at io n ex am s ( s ch ed ul ed i n J un e an d
November each year), and having a minimum
o f tw o ye ar s of p ra ct ic al e xp er ie nc e. I n th e
past, Mohawk has been an associate provider
f o r t h e C a n a d i a n I n s t i t u t e o f F i n a n c i a l
Pl anning (CIF P), wh ich o ffered a s ix-cour se
p r o g r a m t o c o m p l e t e t h e r e q u i r e d c o u r s e
m a t er i a l f o r t h e F PS C C e x am s . As of Ap r i l
2 0 0 2 , t h e C I F P h a s c h a n g e d t h e i r n a me t o
I FS E an d ch an g e d t he ir C FP p ro gr am f ro m
s i x t e x t - b a s e d c o u r s e s t o f o u r w e b b a s e d
c o u r s e s . T h e C I F P w i l l g i v e a n y s t u d e n t s
e n r ol l e d i n t h e ol d s i x - co u r s e pr o g r am o n e
year to complete the courses in the text-based
version. Therefore this is the last semester that
Mohawk will offer these text-based courses.

has developed an in-house CFP program that
qualifies for the accreditation exams of the
FPSCC. This will involve a four-course
program that will cover the key issues of:
Fundamentals of Financial Planning, Risk
Management, Insurance, Investment Vehicles,
Income Tax issues, Retirement Planning,
Estate and Family concerns.

FINANCIAL ENVIRONMENT
This course covers key aspects of financial
planning including the time value of money,
setting financial goals, budgeting, personal
income tax, insurance, debt and credit
management, ownership and investments.
You will be introduced to the Canadian Income
Tax System in regards to personal tax issues
and concepts, tax strategies, and special
issues in the area of personal financial planning.

INVESTMENT PLANNING
This course examines the nature of capital
marketgs. You will be introduced to the
characteristics of securities, the operation of
securities markets and the issues underlying
modern portfolio theory. The course describes
Canadian financial markets, investor objectives
and the selection of investments to fulfil these
objectives given the limitations of risk and
return. Textbooks to be purchased at Mohawk

PROFESSIONAL PRACTICE
Comprehensive Financial Practice and
Professional Ethics: Gives a synopsis of the
material discussed in the previous five
courses. It also covers professional liability
and the Code of Ethics of the Financial
Planners Standards Council. Finally, five case
studies help the students prepare for the
Professional Proficiency Exam. (THE
