Program of Studies<br />

Successful applicants must complete the<br />

following (equal to 240 hours) to qualify for<br />

the certificate:<br />

1. The Program of Studies includes four<br />

required courses from McMaster (72<br />

hours-approx.), 90 hours from <strong>Mohawk</strong><br />

and 38 hours from any partner institution.<br />

The number of hours per course will vary<br />

between each of the institutions but will<br />

require at least 162 hours of instruction at<br />

the university/college certificate level.<br />

2. McMaster University courses must include<br />

History of the Labour Movements - Parts I<br />

& II, and Addressing the Challenges<br />

Facing the Labour Movement - Parts I &<br />

II, plus two electives.<br />

3. 1 Additional credit(s) equivalent to 38<br />

hours from McMaster, <strong>Mohawk</strong> or a<br />

partner institution.<br />

4. <strong>Mohawk</strong> <strong>College</strong> courses must include one<br />

course from a menu of courses related to<br />

hours from a menu of courses related to the<br />

ADDRESSING CHALLENGES FACING<br />

THE LABOUR MOVEMENT<br />

(PART 2)(required)<br />

This 2 part course will look at the challenges<br />

facing the labour movement. Three main<br />

topics will be addressed. First, what is<br />

happening to the job market? What kinds of<br />

jobs are being created & who is getting them?<br />

Second, how is globalization affecting the<br />

world of work. Third, how is our economy<br />

being restructured & what impact is this<br />

having on the workplace? Throughout both<br />

sections, an emphasis will be placed on how<br />

labour has responded to these challenges.<br />

HISTORY OF STEEL WORKERS<br />

This course explores the history of the<br />

USWA in Canada, with particular emphasis<br />

on Hamilton, from the days of S.W.O.C. in<br />

the 1930’s to the present period. It will<br />

explore breakthroughs made by the USWA<br />

thoughout it’s history in areas ranging from<br />

collective bargaining and strikes to politics,<br />

emphasizing the contribution this union has<br />

made both to it’s own members and working<br />

people across Canada. It will draw on<br />

historical documents as well as the stories of<br />

USWA activists and leaders.<br />

TOO MUCH, TOO LITTLE, TOO RISKY<br />

This course will offer a critical examination<br />

of people’s experience of work and their<br />

increasing inability to balance work with<br />

family & community commitments. It will<br />

examine various contemporary changes to<br />

work & the workplace including issues of<br />

overtime, short-term and part-time<br />

employment and the difficulties faced by<br />

youth and certain other groups in finding<br />

“good” jobs. This course will also look at<br />

some evidence of the growing risk and injury<br />

of workers in contemporary workplaces.<br />
