3. Baker’s method and the Mordell–Weil sieve. A third method is the <strong>on</strong>e we havementi<strong>on</strong>ed before: Baker’s method combined with the variant of the Mordell–Weilsieve [15] to find the <str<strong>on</strong>g>integral</str<strong>on</strong>g> <str<strong>on</strong>g>points</str<strong>on</strong>g>. This is the more general method, as it doesnot depend <strong>on</strong> the genus, and it does not involve computati<strong>on</strong>s of unit groups,but <strong>on</strong>ly bounds <strong>on</strong> the regulator of large degree number fields which are easyto compute. Nevertheless, the computati<strong>on</strong>s for the Mordell–Weil sieve can beexpensive. Thus, <strong>on</strong>e would like to reduce the upper bound obtained from Baker’smethod as much as possible, to sieve up to a not so large bound, or not to haveto sieve at all.6
