History <strong>of</strong> <strong>Huntersville</strong> <strong>Parks</strong> and <strong>Recreation</strong> DepartmentThe <strong>Town</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>Huntersville</strong> began providing parks and recreation services in 1995. Thetown took over the operation <strong>of</strong> the David B. Waymer Center and Park fromMecklenburg County in 1995. The <strong>Town</strong> built its first park (<strong>Huntersville</strong> Athletic Park)shortly after in 1997. In 1999, the <strong>Town</strong> took over the operation <strong>of</strong> North MecklenburgPark from Mecklenburg County. The <strong>Town</strong> also added a second phase to NorthMecklenburg Park in 2001. This same year the <strong>Town</strong> opened the <strong>Huntersville</strong> FamilyFitness & Aquatic Center.The <strong>Huntersville</strong> <strong>Parks</strong> and <strong>Recreation</strong> Department developed its first <strong>Parks</strong> and<strong>Recreation</strong> <strong>Master</strong> <strong>Plan</strong> in 1998. This plan was updated in 2004.During the earlier 2000s the town continued to see dramatic growth in its population andrecreation programs. The first <strong>of</strong> many partnerships with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schoolswas begun in 2000, with the joint development <strong>of</strong> the <strong>Huntersville</strong> Elementary SchoolGym. Ten years later, the <strong>Town</strong> now has seven joint use agreements with local schools.In November <strong>of</strong> 2003, the citizens <strong>of</strong> <strong>Huntersville</strong> approved a $6 million Park Bond. The<strong>Town</strong> allocated $3 million <strong>of</strong> those bonds in 2004. These funds were used to buildRichard Barry Park, Robert Bradford Park, additions to Waymer Park and improvementsto North Mecklenburg Park. In 2008, the town allocated another $2.5 million <strong>of</strong> thosebonds. These bonds went towards the construction <strong>of</strong> the Barnette Elementary SchoolGym, Lake Norman Charter High School Gym, North Mecklenburg Park TennisComplex, Abernathy Park Shelter/Restroom Building, <strong>Huntersville</strong> Athletic Park………………………………………………………………………………………………………NOVEMBER 7, 201114
