At the Bunge Fertilizantesunit of Guará (SP), liquefied petroleumgas (LPG) has been replaced bybiomass, since 2003. Besides reducinggreenhouse gas emissions by 24,221tons for the period between 2003and 2006, the Guará Biomass Projectallows Bungeto generate carbon credits, whichhave been approved by the executivecouncil of the Clean DevelopmentMechanism (CDM) (See details inEconomic Performance section). In 2007,the Cajati unit began using LiquefiedNatural Gas (LNG), which emits lessCO 2, SO X, particulate materials, andhydrocarbons than the previouslyused fuels. This use of GLN was themain contributor to that unit’s 17%reduction of CO 2emissions that year.Additionally, a project to reduce trafficof raw materials within the plants isDirect emissions of greenhouse gases in 2007Unitbeing developed by the Araxá unit ofBunge Fertilizantes. The initiatives forEN-18 GRIenergy efficiencyand the adoption of biomass by BungeAlimentos also contribute, indirectly, toreducing the release of pollutants andgreenhouse gases into the atmosphere. As for Fertimport, because it is aprovider of services, it does not recordsignificant air emissions.EN-16 GRItons of equivalent CO2Cubatão 28,239.97Cajati 67,874.09Araxá* 97,611.37Bunge Fertilizantes** 193,725.43Bunge Alimentos*** 42,332.54* *the unit reported a 12,578 tons emission on 2006. The variation between years is due to a variation inscope: the last survey considered solely the emissions caused by transportation. This year, the unit’ssurvey includes emissions caused by energy generation.** Emission computed based on the IPC/2006, level 1 methodology. The remaining units of BungeFertilizantes are not equipped with systems that can generate this data.*** emissions computed based on GHG protocol Initiative methodology.Obs1: Fertimport doesn’t have relevant emissions of greenhouse gases.Obs2: Bunge is not equipped with a system to generate data regarding indirect emission of greenhouse gases.60 | Bunge | Sustainability Report
