year in the areas mapped. We continue to work to engage the government with the ultimate goal of achieving aplan for sustainable development in the Amazon. We strongly believe that this is the bestway to contribute to its conservation. The Federal Government, represented by the Ministry of the Environment, is also our partner in anotherextremely valuable initiative: the creation and distribution of the manual Environmental Responsibility inAgricultural Production, which informs farmers about the Forestry Code and the best way of growing crops withminimum environmental impact. The initial print run, distributed to farmers in the Cerrado, was 20,000 copies.Another successful alliance in 2007 was the SUSTAINABLE PLANET initiative, a partnership between Bunge,Editora Abril, Banco Real, and CPFL Energia, to discuss, inform, and produce information on sustainability. In addition to the publication of hundreds of reports on vehicles by Editora Abril, the partnership supportedthe distribution of 2.5 million manuals with sustainable consumption information, the Etiquette Manual for aSustainable Planet. All of these dialogues and engagement activities over the past year culminated in December with the creation ofthe Stakeholders Panel – a first for Bunge. The meeting brought together customers, employees, representatives ofconscious consumption environmental groups, and financial institutions to discuss Bunge’s activities, focusing onthe soundness and balance of the topics in this report. Bunge’s intention behind the event was to solicit the opinionsof these stakeholder groups to foster improvements in the report and also in the management of our operations, asrecommended by the third-generation GRI standards, the methodology we applied in preparing this report. The Sustainability Report was both praised and criticized. Input from the Stakeholders Panel has already beenincorporated into this edition, including contributions from outsiders involved in our activities. The formation of the Stakeholders Panel, together with the other activities listed, reflects the definitiveincorporation of sustainability into Bunge’s business. Strategically, we have entered new areas and have over 30initiatives under way, which are monitored and followed for compliance with established goals. Today, when Bungedecides to build a new unit or on other significant changes in an operation, our planning process evaluates theimpact on our business performance as well as our values of social and environmental responsibility. Our efforts are slowly having a positive effect on the Group’s perception in the marketplace. In 2007, Bungewas selected as the country’s most valuable agribusiness brand, and ranked 17th among all Brazilian companies, according to the British consulting firm Brand Finance. The evaluation was made based on the criteria of social/environmental responsibility, product and service quality, and corporate governance. We are not only happy about Bunge’s success: we are pleased to be making a contribution to the developmentof agribusiness in the country. And we will continue to prove, through our actions, that food production can beexpanded without compromising the environment.Mário BarbosaCEO Bunge FertilizantesSérgio WaldrichCEO Bunge AlimentosSustainability Report | Bunge |
