Seven Steps Towards Lower Cholesterol
By Nutrifort’s Nicole Hankins
Most people know that
cholesterol is a type of fat
that circulates in our blood
and plays a major role in
the heart’s health. But what
fewer people know is that
their daily eating habits and
lifestyle choices may put
them at risk of developing
high cholesterol.
While genetics in part
dictate your cholesterol levels,
the amount of physical
activity you engage in and
your food choices are more
significant factors. If you are
prone to heart disease because
your body produces
more cholesterol than it
needs, medication may be
the only way to control it. In
other cases, however, there
are ways to lower cholesterol
without medication.
1) Replace white foods such
as sugar, white rice and flour
with whole grains like brown
rice and whole wheat flour.
2) Choose a diet high in
fruit, vegetables, beans and
whole grains and low in
animal fat.
3) Avoid hydrogenated oils,
saturated fats and trans fats,
which have a higher melting
point and longer shelf life
because they are solid rather
than liquid. The best oils are
made from olive, sunflower,
peanut, soybean, corn and
sesame.
4) Don't count calories.
Instead, monitor fats and
sugars that cause heart
problems. Eat a high-fiber
and low-fat diet.
5) Take three grams of fish
oil supplements daily. Rich
in omega-3 fatty acids, fish
oil can help reduce sudden
cardiac death by 50 to 80
percent and help decrease
breast and prostate cancer.
6) Quit smoking. Smoking
puts you at much great risk
of developing heart disease.
If you have high cholesterol
and smoke, you quadruple
your risk.
7) Get regular exercise. Physical
activity increases HDL
levels and lowers your risk of
heart disease. Aerobic activity
like brisk walking, biking or
swimming at moderate-tovigorous
intensity is the best
way to condition your heart.
Aim for a minimum of 45 minutes,
three times per week.
The goal is to get your total
cholesterol under 150 milligrams
per deciliter of blood
(mg/dL). The LDL (low-density
lipoprotein) or the “bad” cholesterol
needs to be under 95
mg/dL and the HDL (highdensity
lipoprotein) or “good”
cholesterol level should be
greater than 40 mg/dL.
If your total cholesterol
levels fall between 200 to 239
mg/dL, they are borderline
high. If they exceed 240 mg/
dL, you have high blood cholesterol.
When this happens,
it’s time to take a look at your
lifestyle and assess whether
you need to take one or
more of these seven steps.
