Living Your Life
By Paul Mclardie
The vast majority of people
working in Vietnam have
health insurance through their
employer. However, what
happens if you fall ill and can’t
return to work? Do you know
how long your sick benefits
will last?
Paying for your children’s
education, rent and day-today
life will start to eat away
at your savings and soon
enough, you may find yourself
on a plane back home, even
if you want to stay here.
So, what can you do?
There are two alternatives:
either live off your savings or
consider purchasing disability
insurance.
Living off of your savings
will only last as long as you
can make it last. Think about
how much you earn. Add
to that the things that your
employer may already pay
for—your rent, car, flight allowances
and the children’s
school fees. Next, look at the
value of your savings. If you
wish to continue leading the
life you have at the moment,
your savings may quickly
diminish.
You could take a regular
income from your savings,
leaving the pot untouched
and living off the interest. But
how much will you actu-
ally need to replace the lost
income? For example, for you
to have an income from your
savings at 5 percent of USD
$40,000, you would need to
have a savings in excess of
$700,000. Not many people
have that.
The second option is to
have separate critical illness
or income protection insurance.
These are plans that
you can pay into monthly.
Like automobile or house
insurance, you only get paid
if something happens to
you. The price of these plans
varies depending on factors
such as your age, occupation
and general health.
You wouldn’t think twice
about taking auto or home
insurance, so why not insure
yourself?
Please make sure that
your health insurance is up to
date and the level of cover is
more than what you think you
require, but also have a look
at income protection insurance.
The first may save your
life; the latter will let you lead
it how you want.
