Transparency: Is it Important?
By Gary Woollacott
At a recent networking event
I was pleased to receive
feedback on this column. The
best bit was that it wasn’t
unqualified praise, but rather
constructive criticism. So,
DW—you know who you
are—this column is dedicated
to you. Thanks for sharing
your views.
It was suggested that
a suitable topic would be
transparency, defined as the
importance of being clear in
our dealings with colleagues,
clients and acquaintances.
How many times have we
suspected that others have
a hidden agenda? Have you
had the feeling that someone
just isn’t playing it straight?
Why can't people be truthful?
After all, you are, so why
aren't they?
That's not to say that one
has to be totally open about
everything—we all have our
commercial and personal
secrets—but it is important
to create a sense of trust,
and displaying an honest and
open attitude in your dealings
can be a good way to foment
that.
Being transparent projects
self-confidence and a feeling
that one is reliable and can be
trusted. In my business, we
have found this to be invaluable.
To be able to talk openly
with clients about the market,
candidates and the likelihood
of achieving their business
goals has paid dividends.
They come to believe that
we know the market and we
know what we are doing.
Fostering trust, understanding
our experience and our
readiness to share knowledge
are essential elements of our
consulting services; without it
we would simply be a provider
of CVs.
This hasn’t come about by
accident, of course, and we
have had some pretty heated
arguments in our office about
the wisdom of being so open.
My own feeling is that yes,
there are people out there
who will take advantage, but
the benefits of displaying trust
and integrity far outweigh the
occasional disappointment
(even though it hurts).
Think about it: What might
you gain by being more transparent?
There’s certainly some
risk, but being truthful on a
regular basis easily trumps
being selective with the truth
and then spending productive
effort trying to remember
to whom you told what and
when. This is wasting precious
energy that could be spent
building your business or your
career.
As usual, let me know if
you have any particular topic
you would like to see covered
here.
