(8.2.26) GIS Strategy• National framework for Sectoral Geographical Information SystemsLGCSBUpdateThe Local Government Computer Services Board (LGCSB) has developed a frameworkfor the utilisation <strong>of</strong> Geographic Information Systems in local authorities. All LGCSBInternet GIS applications will be built using this basic framework.Since August the basic infrastructure has been implemented in twelve Local Authorities,with implementations ongoing where requested. This includes the ability to presentinformation using maps.An enhanced version <strong>of</strong> the basic implementation is being piloted in January 2003, inCork City Council and Laois County Council. Following testing, this will be rolled outto all Local Authorities.A pro<strong>of</strong> <strong>of</strong> concept project, to test the interoperability <strong>of</strong> the Open GIS standards is tocommence Q1 2003.(8.2.27) Security Policy• Develop security policy and architecture for the Local Government sectorLGCSBUpdateA security policy to allow for e-Goverment has been developed. The Security Policy andArchitecture is currently being implemented in all Local Authority Offices. So far most<strong>of</strong> the Local Authority Offices have been audited and prepared for rationalisation. Asignificant number <strong>of</strong> sites are already certified. It is expected that all Local AuthorityOffices will be certified by mid 2003.(8.2.28) GIS Heritage InformationELG• Online provision <strong>of</strong> geographic information systems relating to heritage by end 2003UpdateThis project was significantly slowed following the transfer <strong>of</strong> Dúchas to the <strong>Department</strong><strong>of</strong> the Environment and Local Government as ICT staff assigned to the project did nottransfer to the DoELG. Work on the project will re-start in 2003 as staff vacancies arefilled.68
