Print mediaThe history of print media goes back by a century in Nepal. Gorkhapatrais its living history. But what is true is initial years of Gorkhapatra were notinfluenced by journalism. NepalJournalists Association (NJA) was founded in 1952 after realizing theexpediency to protect the interests of the journalists along with thepublication of the publications. The organized efforts were entangled withpolitical wrangling and bickering for the next one and half decade. Theperiod ruled out any bid on the part of the NJA to organize journalists onfirm footing. The passage of a decade culminated in journalists waking upto the need to organize themselves. Nepalese journalists who were affiliatedto different associations came together in 1966 following a conference. Thiswas the first conference. (Grism Bahadur 1994)The conference endorsed a 22-point ethics for Nepalese journalists.One among three who contributed to the ethics was erstwhile editor ofSamaj newspaper, Mani Raj Upadhayay. That was the phase when journalismwas ridden with factions. Rather than the newspapers disseminatinginformation to the people, the trend was to downplay information. Wethought it essential to issue the ethics to put an end to this kind of anomalies.A perusal of newspapers going back to that period suggests thatnewspapers were polarized between Indian, Soviet and Chinese camps.The journalism which was divided into factions was also affecting the foreignpolicy conduct of the country.Code of Conduct endorsed by Nepal JournalistsAssociation, 1966 (Grisma Bahadur 1994.)1. Since journalism is the primary vehicle in the dissemination of newsand evolution of clean, healthy public opinion, and desired publicbehavior, journalists must be committed to forge ahead as the guardianand protector of public interest, protectors of world humanity andpeace by considering it as an responsibility inhered in theirprofession.21

Journalists must in the discharge of their duty respect fundamental,human and social rights and use their peace and capacity in specialway for the mutual goodwill and unity among castes, community andregion while fighting against violence in the nation.3. Journalists must take confidence, faith and element of justice as thefundamental duty in their profession while disseminating news andviews while also making it a point to refrain from carrying any news indeliberate manner which is either false or which is against public interest,boosts or damages personal interest while also not withholding orspiriting away any news driven by a particular motive doing which canaffect public life.4. One must own up the news and views so published. Just in the eventno such responsibility has been shown the same must be clarified.5. One must respect the faith reposed on oneself while the professionalsecrecy is also upheld.6. One must make desired corrections once the news carried proves to befalse. The reactions on news should be published with the same degreeof priority as the news was given just in the event the reactions hascast impact on the spirit of the news.7. Differences should not set in bad blood among journalists. Neithershould one affect the profession of the other nor raise question markover the existence of the others as publications or journalists nor raisedebate, attack, launch a counter-attack on personal ground by whippingup public issues.8. Journalists should not allow personal agenda to prevail overprofessional duty while also not using sacred profession into nonjournalistarea.9. It goes dead against the position of a journalist just in the event anyoneends up backing or protesting the publication of news or opinion whilechasing selfish interest or hoping for financial or physical incentive ofany kind.10. Compilation and publication of news and facts in honest manner andright to publication and indulging in desired criticism and commentaryare those rights which must be always upheld and protected byjournalists.11. It is not becoming to give space to rumors or lose talks surroundinglives of individuals at any level of society if the same does not in anyway affect the public events even if they are true.12. Newspapers must remain impervious to materials which can giveimpetus to perversion or crime.13.
