But these organizations have at timesspecially come up with news policy even if that means merely to keep thethings moving along. May 12, 2000 saw <strong>Radio</strong> Nepal and Nepal Televisioncoming up with a 30-point policy what purported to be a news policy for thefirst time. The order stipulated in this policy forms the basis when <strong>Radio</strong>Nepal finalizes the sequence of news stories.News policy of <strong>Radio</strong> Nepal andNepal Television, 2000It is essential to bring about timely changes in the traditional newsstructure in the wake of the need to face professional competition whileretaining the element of credibility and authority of the media agenciesunder government. The following policy-driven priorities could be suitablewhen it comes to disseminate news, news based programs and informationfrom electronic media under His Majesty’s Government in a way whichupholds and promotes the provision of the people to be informed and givesmeaningful expression to the spirit the Constitution of Nepal, 1990.1. Concepts related to multi-party democracy, constitutional monarchy,and other directive principles enshrined in the constitution shall bethe top priority2. While fixing news priority in the government news organizationspriority shall be given to events or importance of its content, itsseriousness and general public interest except in the case of the newsrelated to the highly revered institution of the country or personalityassociated with the same. Going by that issue of priority will comprise:(a) His Majesty the King(b) News priority must be arrived at after keeping the news related toPrime Minister at the top while other news items are given due prioritydepending on news value.3. Attention must be paid to the importance attached with the news whileevent related news should be carried only if it is important from news pointof view.4. His Majesty the King, Prime Minister and news related to political partiesnationally recognized must be put on priority.5. The parliamentary proceedings, the verdict of national importance26
