He can only have acceptedthese repulsive Stoic maxims by putting a forcedmeaning on the words, and condemning love, pity,and resentment, when they are only passionate moodsand deaf to the voice of reason. No sect, he says,has shown more love to mankind than the Stoic ;andhere, of course, love passes into a higher stage of rationalaction, free from such taint of undisciplined emotion.With Seneca himself it tends to be a mere questionof words, for all the affections that a peremptorydefinition has proscribed are re-admitted under athin disguise as reasonable states. But the theoryitself thus stands condemned as beingeither false tonature, or a truism stated in most unnatural language.Its whole influence must have tended to repressemotion and check the free expression of thesympathies of social life. It appealed to the intellectindeed to undertake the corresponding duties, thoughwithout the assistance of its best ally, but it had littlepower to move the hearts of weak and ignorant menby terms so hard and cold, so little coloured by theloveliness of Christian graces. It spoke with forceto the strong and self-contained, who felt no needof stimulus, and could be a law unto themselves,but it could scarcely fail to foster intellectual prideby raising man to the level of his God, by leavinghim nothing to look up to, nothing to depend on,with no distrust of his own power to defy the loudeststorms of fortune. That pride must have borderedclosely on contempt for weaker natures, who had nosuch confidence in their own clearness of judgment
