THE RISE OF STOICISM.3 1schools we find some modest traces <strong>of</strong> endowments.Thus Theophrastus in his will disposed as follows <strong>of</strong>the house and garden near the Ilissus which cameinto his hands after Aristotle'sdeath :— " My gardenand the walk, and all the buildings which adjoin theglebe, I bequeath to such <strong>of</strong> my friends herein describedas care to pass their lives in them together instudy and philosophy, on condition that no one shallalienate them or make any individual claim; butthat all shall share alike, and live in domestic peacetogether,as is natural and right."Epicurus also left his famous garden, at his death,for the members <strong>of</strong> his school, and also set apart somefunds to keep the student world together." I givemy property in trust to Amynomachus and Timocrates,on the condition that they make over the use <strong>of</strong> thegarden and all it contains to Hermarchus and thosewho join his speculations, and to such as he maychoose to take his place, that they may there givethemselves to study ; and, moreover, I beg all whotake their principles from me to do their best as asolemn trust to keep Amynomachus and Timocratesto maintain the school-buildings inmy garden, andtheir heirs after them, as also those who may be appointedto replace my own successors. And out <strong>of</strong>the funds bequeathed by me I will that my executors,in concert with Hermarchus, provide religious servicesfor my father and mother, and brothers, and myself. . . and also for the stated meeting, to be held onthe 20th <strong>of</strong> every month, byall the members <strong>of</strong> mysect."
