10 2010: New year, new finances2010:Five steps to financial fitnessFrom starting a spending diary to making sure you’re fully covered, our useful checklistwill help to get your money matters in shape for the year ahead1Make a budget...and stick to itStart by writing a list of all yourregular financial and household expensesand all your utilities providers, insurancepolicies, bank accounts, credit cards,savings and investments. Work out howmuch you’re spending each month, howmuch money you have coming in, and howmuch <strong>this</strong> leaves you for the non-essentials,such as going out for meals and shopping.2Set savings goalsIf you don’t have a savingsaccount, open one now! Seeour directory on page 30 for help. If you’resaving already, try to increase the amountof money you put back each month. Easyways to have a bit more cash left over toinvest include taking lunch to work, oreating out less often. An account thatgives you quick access to your savings,such as <strong>Foresters</strong>’ ISA, could be goodif you’re caught short with a large bill andneed money quickly, while more longtermsavings accounts like <strong>Foresters</strong>’ TaxExempt Savings Plan or Bond could giveyou a good return for the future.3Tighten up youroutgoingsMake sure your moneyisn’t languishing away in anyforgotten accounts by logging on towww.mylostaccount.org.uk. Findout if you’re getting the best deal on yourutilities by using comparison websites suchas www.uswitch.com, and see if you’reeligible for subsidised energy and moneysavinghome improvements by contactingthe Energy Saving Trust on 0800 512 012or visiting www.energysavingtrust.org.uk.4Keep on top of taxCheck your tax code. This usuallyconsists of one letter and a fewnumbers, all of which mean somethingdifferent. Make sure yours is correct bylogging on to www.hmrc.gov.uk andclicking on ‘Income Tax’ and then ‘Taxcodes’. Take advantage of tax-efficientsavings accounts such as an ISA or a TaxExempt Savings Plan (see page 30 formore on <strong>Foresters</strong>’ tax-efficient accounts).Check you’re not missing out on any taxcredits or eligible benefits by logging on towww.entitledto.co.uk. And make sureyou’re in the correct Council Tax band– visit www.voa.gov.uk/council_tax.5Checkyou’re fully coveredFirstly, make sure you’reinsured in case something bad orunexpected happens. This should includeprotection for your home, car and health.And make certain that you’re adequatelycovered in all of these areas. In a recentsurvey, a third of people involved said theyeither knew they had too little insurance orthat they weren’t sure what their coveragewas.
