Area newsThames valleyJim and his wifeJanet at theautumn lunchCelebrating and fundraising lunchesHigh Chief Ranger Jim Launchbury and his wife Janet joined fellowmembers from Courts No 4961 and 2991 for a celebration lunch atHawkwell Hotel in Oxford. A raffle and collection boxes raised £238.In addition, Court No 4961 donated £4 for each guest who attended,making a grand total of £478 raised for the MS <strong>Society</strong>.This was followed by Thames Valley’s autumn lunch at the SandfordSprings Golf Club in Kingsclere (pictured left). A raffle raised £160, <strong>this</strong> timefor the area charity, and the event was enjoyed by all.pride of kentClosure of Herne Bayconvalescent homeAfter offering convalescent carefor almost 120 years, the homeat Herne Bay closed at theend of October. A combinationof falling guest numbers anddonations and a severe reductionin the value of its assets meantthere was no choice but to closethe home. The Board of Trusteeswould like to thank the home’sstaff, supporters and guests fortheir dedication over the years.Forester steals the showCourt ‘Union Jack’ No3825’s dinner dance at theAshford International Hotelattracted 100 people,with special gueststhe Mayor of Ashfordand High Chief RangerJim Launchbury. Thehighlight of the nightwas the appearanceof Forester, theguide dog fundedby the Darlingtonfamily andthe branch.Festive fundraisingCourt ‘Alma’ No2768 welcomed60 members andfriends to the BourneValley Inn to start theChristmas season offwith a swing. JimLaunchbury and twoPast High ChiefRangers attended.£300 was raisedfor the MS <strong>Society</strong>.WestIt’s been an active time for Members,with a quiz, ten pin bowling and skittlesGrey cells in actionThe area’s annualquiz was held at theRoyal British LegionClub in Liskeard in lateOctober. Area ChairmanStan Reynolds set thequestions. Phil Rogersand Dot and Lou Colwill,from Court ‘Goodwill’,were the winning team.Ten pin bowlingat TrethorneCourt ‘Goodwill’sannual ten pin bowlingcompetition took placeat Trethorne LeisurePark. The winnerwas Mike Hill of Plympton,Stan Reynoldspresents the trophyto Mike and Patwhile Wendy Hunn took the booby prize. A draw for the High ChiefRanger’s Appeal raised £45.Mike Hill struck it lucky again at the skittles meeting at Lee Mill,winning with his wife Pat.
