Shirley isclearly a lady – the‘Gentleman’ refers to thelate Ethel Gentleman, aloyal member of thebranch in whose memorythe award was set up.Shirley does a great deal to support her family, friends, variouscommunity groups and, of course, <strong>Foresters</strong>. She was presentedwith the silver rose bowl at a champagne buffet evening by last year’swinner, Tricia Thompson. Sheila Turley (Ethel Gentleman’s daughter)then gave Shirley a certificate and a cheque for her chosen charity,the Nightingale Community Hospice Trust.14 Winter 2010 MiscellanyBowls away!Over 20 people took part in Court 1351’s fundraiserand taster session in Enfield to kick off the indoorbowls season. Among the players were High ChiefRanger and North London Area Co-ordinator JimLaunchbury and North London Area Chief RangerJoan Burtrand – both, it would appear, first-timebowlers. The afternoon raised £116 for the MultipleSclerosis <strong>Society</strong>.Special guests at ‘Tubal Cain’Court ‘Tubal Cain’ was thrice honouredat its November social with the attendanceof High Chief Ranger Jim Launchbury andhis wife, Andrew Pooley, from the Board ofDirectors, and his wife, and Bishop Jackson.Henry Cleghorn formally introduced Jim,who presented Bishop Jackson with acertificate of merit and Past Chief Ranger’sregalia to Raymond Victor.Tricia passes the bowlon to Shirley (right)View and post morephotos of these andother events on<strong>Foresters</strong> Friends atwww.forestersfriends.co.uksouth londonChristmas with friendsCourt ‘Wellington’ held a successfulChristmas dinner in early December.During the meal, member Louisa Byrnetalked about travelling to South Africawith the Girl Guides to work with childrenorphaned by HIV. After dinner, guestswere entertained by a bellringing troupe.Educational grant thank youBeth O’Callaghan, a memberof Court ‘Planet of Streatham’,was most grateful to receive anEducational Award grant from<strong>Foresters</strong>, and is now working asa speech and language therapist.Area festivitiesNearly 90 members and guests attendedan excellent four-course Christmasmeal at Farnborough Masonic Hall inDecember. Guests of honour were HighSub Chief Ranger Michael Grealy and hiswife Shirley. A raffle raised £207 for charity.Down at the zooSome 126 members of all agesgot together in the autumn to visitWhipsnade Zoo. Everyone enjoyedthe warm sunny day, seeing thelions, tigers, elephants, hippos,lemurs and bears, and they all lookforward to the 2010 outing!Enjoyingthe sights atWhipsnade Zoo
