Fifth Grade ReportUNSW Cricket Club Annual ReportFIFTH GRADE REPORTFifth Grade had a below‐average season, reflecting the lack of depth in the club this year. Wemanaged three wins and two draws (one a match saved, the other a washout), but incurred ten losses. The explanation was fairly simple: lack of runs. Averaging just 19 runs per wicket – despite playinghalf our games at DP – meant we only set one decent target all year (268 v. Sydney) and failed in asuccession of low chases (Wests, Penrith, Gordon). Our best batting performance was againstNorthern Districts, when we made 6‐322 away. The only problem was they’d made 6‐384 theprevious week! That said, the application in the team improved significantly after lame early efforts againstSutherland and Saints, and excepting a late blemish against Randwick. In particular, our bowling andfielding at DP were both very disciplined: no side got away from us, and we nearly stole a couple ofextra wins. The most notable performances were by our various spinners, including Lincoln Liu(twice), Tom Atallah, Nick Janzen, Ravin Hettiarachchi, Mick Mag and Oliver Yee.Luke Williams and Simon Pearce were the pick of the medium pacers, and were also redoubtablewith the stick. Hawkeye averaged over 30 including 76* against NDs, while Luke was always difficultto shift. As to other batters, Pradeep Widana‐Pathirana hammered a ton in his only appearance in 5s, whileMatt Edwards went close and fellow Green Shielder James Hamilton impressed in his couple ofappearances. Andrew Julian and Naser Saleh continued to improve through the season, while HughCampbell, Tom Atallah, Mick Rea and Chris O’Brien made useful cameos. Phil Goulstone addedexperience in the top order and catches in the slips, while Gayan Vithanage, BuddhikaWickramaratna, Faraz Syed, Naeef Mostafa, Ben Whitton, Amalesh Sukumar and BikramKarmakar all had their moments and were a pleasure to have in the side. It was nice to get a few runsmyself, although the 4 self‐induced run‐outs were regrettable! Also, special thanks to Bikram for your deft handling of 6th Grade – you did a superb job.ANDREW JONESMATCH SUMMARIES – 5 TH GRADERd Venue LO Inns of: Score Ov Inns of: Score Ov1 David Phillips * Blacktown 7/210 50 UNSW 8/214 40.3South Shorey,Prateek 2/31 8 Widana-Pathirana,Pradeep 112 112 (92)Mark,Julian C 2/38 10Pearce,Simon D 2/51 10Result:Won on first innings (6 points)2 Tonkin Park UNSW 47 31.2 Sutherland 3/85 d. 22.5Williams,Luke J 2/13 6Hettiarachchi,Ravin M 1/0 0.5(2nd Inns) 3/74 34.1Syed,Faraz 27* (67)Result:Loss on first innings (0 points) - Play Abandoned Day 2 due to rain3 Cahill Park * St.George 7/237 50 UNSW 7/123 50Campbell,Hugh 3/40 10 Pearce,Simon D 36* (72)Pearce,Simon D 1/23 6 Jones,Andrew C 23 (87)Result:Loss on first innings (0 points)4 David Phillips Bankstown 240 79 UNSW 176 60South Edwards,Matthew J 3/24 8 Campbell,Hugh 42 (47)Mark,Julian C 2/22 8 Jauregui,Victor 33 (132)Campbell,Hugh 2/58 16 Wickramaratna,Buddhika 31 (33)Result:Loss on first innings (0 points)Page 58 Season 2008/2009
