86 WHO STOLE FEMINISM?Professor Thernstrom, for example, was very surprised to hear thatTakaki spoke about the Irish factory girls of Lowell, Massachusetts, as"silenced": they are in fact among the most studied groups in Americansocial history. But no one remotely like Professor Thernstrom had beeninvited.The spring issue of the journal Transformations had been distributed atthe registration desk. Inside, the editor, Sylvia Baer, compared the universitycurriculum to a dilapidated two-hundred-year-old house she washelping to renovate: "We can all help each other scrape and paint anddesign and build our curriculums. It's hard work, all this renovation, andsometimes the decisions are risky—but look at the glorious results. . . .Together we can do this. I invite you to help with the planning, thebuilding, and the singing and dancing." 18The Parsippany audience, which consisted almost exclusively of whiteAmerican middle-class females, was in fact thrilled by Takaki's "renovations."Paula Rothenberg and Annette Kolodny were beaming throughoutthe talk, and they applauded it wildly. Takaki was the topic of conversationfor the next two days. By providing a vivid example of what atransformationist approach could do, he had helped them all "to imaginetogether a curriculum for the next century." He had said he would do it,and he did.An exhilarating feeling of momentousness routinely surfaces at genderfeminist gatherings. Elizabeth Minnich is among those who invoke Copernicusand Darwin to give us an idea of the vital importance of whatthe feminist theorists have discovered. She and several other transformationiststook part in a panel discussion called "Transforming the KnowledgeBase" in Washington, D.C., in February 1989. The Ford-fundedNational Council of Research on <strong>Women</strong> published the proceedings andreported the mood: "There was a palpable sense of making history in theroom as we concluded our discussions." 19But making history and contributing to progress are not necessarily thesame. It is in fact true that the transformationists are having a significanteffect on American education. They are imposing a narrow politicalagenda, diluting traditional scholarly standards, and using up scarce resources.They are doing these things in the name of a transformationproject they themselves do not seem fully to comprehend.
Chapter 5The Feminist ClassroomThe exhilaration of feeling themselves in the vanguard of a new consciousnessinfuses feminist pedagogues with a doctrinal fervor unique inthe academy. Here is how five professors from the University of Massachusettsdescribe the feminist classroom:The feminist classroom is the place to use what we know as womento appropriate and transform, totally, a domain which has beenmen's. ... Let us welcome the intrusion/infusion of emotionality—love, rage, anxiety, eroticism—into intellect as a step toward healingthe fragmentation capitalism and patriarchy have demanded fromus. 1<strong>Women</strong>: A Feminist Perspective is said to be the best-selling women'sstudies textbook of all time. The first selection, "Sexual Terrorism" byCarole J. Sheffield, is a good example of how the feminist classroom can"infuse" anxiety and rage. Ms. Sheffield describes an "ordinary" event that
