Comparison of Electric Bills Figure 2 below compares the electric bill for Premier versus Cresleigh Homes for the month of September 2004. In Figure 2, the largest electric bill in both developments is compared to one another, and the next largest, and so on. The average Cresleigh energy bill during this period is $66.68 while the average Premier energy bill is 70% less at $19.99, and bills for some homes actually becomes negative. While energy use is dependent on many factors, including the occupant habits, these data show a dramatic difference in energy costs. This difference is primarily due to the savings from the PV systems, in addition to the energy efficiency features. Figure 2. Comparison of electric bills for Premier Gardens and Cresleigh Rosewood September 2004 Figures 3 through 5 compare the ZEH versus non-ZEH electric bills for the months of June, July, and August 2005. For each month, the total electric bill (in dollars) is displayed in decreasing magnitude for each of the homes. The average monthly cost for the ZEHs and the non-ZEHs are overlaid for comparison. Overall, the electric bills at Premier Gardens are much lower than those of the non-ZEH community. SMUD publicized these results on numerous occasions and on the Good Morning America show in August 2005. 16
