5.0 Benefits to California Increasing the number of ZEHs in California would create major benefits for the state: • These homes have been shown to decrease energy use and peak demand, which in turn decreases the need for purchasing high-cost peak power and constructing new generation—potentially reducing energy costs for all ratepayers. • ZEHs are built to the very highest construction standards, and will therefore create a stock of quality, long-lasting homes in California. • Energy and peak reductions from each home will continue well into the future. • As the benefits of ZENHomes become more widely known and understood, these homes will create greater market demand for energy efficiency—thus proliferating the related energy and demand benefits. 34
