LL.M. HANDBOOK 2011-2012In numerous courses a familiarity with the common law process is unnecessary, but inothers it might be essential. In others the lecturers may adopt a comparative approach,which has the effect of making the subject matter more accessible to those who did notstudy law in England.You might find it helpful to do some reading on the background to legal study in the(English) common law tradition. The classic introduction to legal study at an Englishuniversity is Learning the Law (14 th edn., 2010) which has recently been comprehensivelyrevised and rewritten by Professor A T H Smith.6. COURSE DEVELOPMENTS FOR 2011-12The Faculty of Law is always seeking ways to develop the LLM and we are pleased toannounce the introduction of two new courses: Corporate Insolvency Law, andConstitutional Law of the European Union.You can find out more about the LLM course on the Faculty’s website at:http://www.law.cam.ac.uk/courses/llm/7. CHOOSING YOUR LLM SUBJECTSCourses on offer in 2011-12A list of the LLM courses prescribed by the Faculty of Law for the current academic year isgiven in Appendix 1. The syllabus for each LLM course is given in the Faculty Handbook2011-12.Choice of Courses and the Thesis OptionLLM students are required to select and be examined in four courses. You will not berequired to indicate your choice of courses until part way through the Michaelmas Term,although the Faculty Board must approve thesis topics earlier. The date for submittinga proposed thesis title is Friday 21 October 2011. Many students sample a variety ofcourses in the first weeks of Michaelmas Term before making a final decision. However,given the considerable workload involved in following the courses properly, you arestrongly urged to come to a firm decision about your courses as soon as possible. Itis permissible to attend the lectures for courses in which you do not intend to be examined,but it is customary to obtain permission to do so from the lecturers concerned.Restrictions on Choice of SubjectsThe Faculty of Law aims to provide a wide range of LLM course options and activelyreviews the range of papers to ensure that topics of particular interest and importance arecovered. Unfortunately it is also sometimes necessary to suspend certain courses.12
