LL.M. HANDBOOK 2011-2012You will find that some course materials are available online as well as many LegalDatabases and legal research tools that will help you to pursue your studies. In order toaccess these you will need to use your Cambridge username and password to log into theFaculty of Law website. It is important that you use your password to login to theFaculty website as some parts of the network are only available to logged in users.The Computer Staff are available to answer any computing-related questions and can becontacted on the second floor in offices S7 and S8. Their address is:computer.office@law.cam.ac.uk3. LIBRARIESThe Squire Law LibraryIntroductionThe Squire Law Library was founded in 1904 and is part of Cambridge University Library. Itoccupies the first, second and third floors of the Law Faculty Building, and houses theprincipal law collection of the University of Cambridge. One of the major law libraries in theCommonwealth, it contains over 180,000 volumes, and provides excellent electronicresearch facilities, including the Freshfields Legal IT Centre. A recent addition to theLibrary’s resources, the Maitland Legal History Room houses an important collection oflegal history materials, and was opened by the Lord Chancellor in 2000.General InformationThe Squire Law Library Opening Hours:Full Term: Monday - Friday 09.00-21.00 (22.00 in Easter Term until the end ofexams)Saturday 09.00-18.00SundayClosedVacation: Monday - Friday 09.00-19.00Saturday 09.00-13.00SundayClosedPlease note that the Squire is not a lending library, although short-term borrowingfrom the LLM Collection is permitted.You will receive an orientation tour of the Library early in the academic year. Details aboutthe tour will be supplied during the first week of term. A description of the Squire appears inthe Faculty Handbook 2011-2012, which is available on the Faculty website.Photocopiers are located in the Copier Room opposite the Library Reference Desk on thefirst floor, and in addition there is one photocopier on the third floor.4
LL.M. HANDBOOK 2011-2012It is most important that those not familiar with the Squire Library should becomeacquainted with the many services which it provides as soon as possible. It is especiallyimportant that you should become familiar with the classification scheme, and with theonline catalogue. Students in the Cambridge Law Faculty are expected to work fromprimary sources (particularly from law reports and statutes) whenever possible. The abilityto use the resources of the Squire Library effectively and creatively is an important featureof the LLM course.If you have any questions concerning the use of the Squire Library, any of its full-time staffwill be pleased to assist you at the Reference Desk on Floor 1 between 9am and 5pm onweekdays during Full Term. It is available for use by LLM studentswhenever the Library is open. The Collection contains copies of items of special relevanceto LLM students (often in addition to copies held in the main collection, which you are alsofree to consult). The Collection also houses boxed sets, one or more for each LLM course,containing photocopies of scarce or inaccessible material.Arrangements for use of the LLM collection will be explained to you during the Libraryorientation tours.The LLM collection is intensively used by all LLM students and therefore it is particularlyimportant that any materials borrowed from the collection be returned as soon as you havefinished with them. If you wish to remove books from the collection for short termborrowing, you will need a University Card. You should already have been issued with aUniversity Card, which you should have found in your college when you arrived inCambridge. If you have not yet received this, please contact your college.The University LibraryThe main University Library (known as the “UL”) is situated off West Road, close to the LawFaculty Building.
