LL.M. HANDBOOK 2011-2012Changing the TitleOnce it has been approved, the title of a thesis may be changed only with the permission ofthe Faculty Board. Such a request, supported in writing by the supervisor, must besubmitted using Form T2 to Suzanne Wade in the Faculty Office before 12 noon onMonday 30 January 2012. Requests received after this date will not be considered.Word LimitThe thesis must not exceed 18,000 words in length including footnotes and appendices, butexcluding bibliography. Where a thesis exceeds 18,000 words, leave to exceed the wordlimit must be obtained from the Chair of LLM Examiners and a copy of the letter grantingpermission must be attached to the declaration at the time of submission.The Faculty Board believes that all candidates should be examined on a comparable basis,and that fairness requires that candidates should submit theses of equal length. TheFaculty Board also considers that the discipline of writing a thesis within the prescribed limitis an integral part of the examination. Therefore extensions will be granted only inexceptional circumstances. Because of the likelihood that permission will be declined youshould apply for such an extension at the earliest opportunity if you consider that suchexceptional circumstances exist. The decision is taken by the LLM Chair of Examiners andcandidates should be aware that if permission is granted the extension given may besmaller than that sought.Requests to exceed the word limit, addressed to the Chair of LLM Examiners, should besubmitted to Suzanne Wade in the Faculty Office. Requests should be submitted no laterthan 12 noon on Thursday 12 April 2012. Requests received after this date will not beconsidered. The application should state the number of words by which the candidateseeks to exceed the word limit, and provide evidence that exceptional circumstanceswarrant an extension.If a candidate has exceeded the word limit without obtaining permission to do so, theExaminers will stop reading the thesis at the point at which the word limit isexceeded.The following do count towards the word limit:Main text, Introduction, Conclusion, Footnotes, AppendicesThe following do not count towards the word limit:Table of Contents, Table of Cases, Tables of Statutes, Table of Abbreviations, Bibliography,Title sheet, Coversheet (Form T3)Submission DeadlineThe thesis must be submitted (with the Coversheet, Form T3) to the LLM Administrator,Suzanne Wade, in the Faculty Office not later than 12 noon on Tuesday 1 May 2012.38
