Page 12 Acushnet schedules special election for debt exclusion vote Acushnet Selectboard Press Release/ Statement On October 25, the Acushnet Selectboard voted to schedule a special election on Monday, December 10th for voters to consider a request to borrow $5.2 million for the construction of a new police department headquarters to be located at 60 Middle Road. We are pleased that town meeting overwhelmingly approved our proposal for a new police facility and send this issue to a special election,” said the board in a statement. “Town meeting is a viatl step in the process where issues receive the greatest amount of scrutiny by our voters and taxpayers. We had a very spirited debate and in the end the voters were convinced that our current police station located in the Parting Ways Building is outdated, inefficient and unsafe. Although it would be more convenient to hold a debt exclusion vote to coincide withour April town election, Mass. General Law requires us to hold a special election within 90 days of town meeting. While we initially thought we woiuld call for an election in mid- January, voters of town meeting spoke loud and clear that all residents should have the opportunity to vote on this important issue. With that in mind, we felt that early December gives us the best chance to avoide inclement weather while also giving those residents who move away for the winter an opportunity to exercise their right. This issue has been on the front burner for over a year now, and has been discussed at countless public and televised meetings in an effort to educate the public on this important issue. However, we cannot assume that all residents are aware of the details of this proposal, therefore, the Selectboard will provide information on the project which will be aired on Cable Channel 18 and aired repeatedly leading up to December 10. Fairhaven as seen real success with CDBG program By Jean Perry Neighb News Correspondent Since 2005, the Town of Fairhaven has received $6.2 million in Commu - nity Development Block Grant (CDBG) funding for infrastructure and housing rehabilitation, transforming neighborhood after neighborhood, under the leadership of Planning and Economic Development Director Bill Roth. One phrase that was repeated over and over by residents during the most recent CDBG neighborhood meeting on 10/24 was “thank you.” Three Elliot Lane residents, hopeful that their gravel cul de sac will be the next neighborhood to be transformed with CDBG funding, attended the meeting to view the plans for improving the street and asked Bill Roth questions about the process. In what is slated to be one of the final projects in the Cushman Park target area, the last gravel road near the center of Fairhaven would be paved, flooding and drainage issues would be corrected, and portions of existing sidewalk would be upgraded. Mr. Roth commended the residents of 42 Bridge Street for allowing the project to move forward by allowing for an easement to access utilities and drainage for Elliot Lane. “They took no money,” said Mr. Roth. “In this day and age everyone’s like this,” he said as he put his hand out, “and they didn’t.” Mr. Roth did promise to pave the areas of the driveway the Town must cut through to run a ductile iron pipe, which Mr. Roth says is “indestruct - ible,” and will continue to repave the entire driveway in a gesture of good faith. “It’s a small project,” Mr. Roth told the Elliot Lane residents. “Well, we thank you because it’s a big one to us,” said Bernadette Costa of 19 Huttleston Avenue, whose corner property runs alongside Elliot What hurricane??? Lane. “We appreciate what you’re doing.” Mr. Roth told the residents that although the project is bid-ready and plans are completed, there is no guaran tee that the CDGB infra - structure funding will be granted. In a follow-up interview, Mr. Roth stated that, so far, all of the CDGB applications he has filed since 2005 have been approved. There will be one more CDGB neighborhood meeting on 11/8. Mr. Roth will then meet with the Selectboard before submitting the application. Mr. Roth said his latest strategy for increasing the odds of getting Fairhaven more of the everincreasingly competitive CDBG funding is by partnering with the Town of Middleboro, with Fairhaven as the lead community. Together, both communities stand to receive a total of $1 million.
