Halloween Horribles invade No. Fairhaven as storm approaches The impending doom of a superstorm Hurricane Sandy did not dampen the mood at the annual Halloween Horribles parade on Sunday, 10/28. Sponsored by the North Fairhaven Improvement Asso - ci a tion, the event drew about 200 people in costumes. The group marched down Main Street, from Page 16 Little Red Riding Hood’s Revenge Benoit Square to St. Mary’s Church, where prizes were awarded for Most Horrible, Most Beautiful and Most Original in different age categories. The event was completely free to participants and included candy treats for all, hot chocolate, and pumpkins. But this is a tale best told in pictures. All photos by Beth David. Hurricane Sandy hits, but doesn’t knock out By Beth David Editor The superstorm, Hurricane Sandy, made landfall in New Jersey, but made a big impact all the way up here in southcoast this week. More than 50 people are dead in seven states. New York City evacuated thousands from around the city and shut down subways which became flooded. Many are still not operating as of press time. Locally, the storm battered the usual places by the shore, downed trees, and caused some damage to buildings, but the area was largely spared the trauma of other states to our south. Officials closed off Sconticut Neck Road at Camel Street after a pole snapped off at the top, caught fire, and dangled from the wires before crews cut it free. Police kept people away from the town beach during most of the day on Monday. The Causeway had some spillover during the morning and evening tides, around 8:30, but did not become impassable. At the end of Causeway Road, however, water flowed up to Alder Street and cut off access to all but the bravest souls. The water was about two feet high at its highest. Police were advising people not to cross. Only residents with hurricane stickers were allowed on the Neck during the height of the storm on Monday. At Fort Phoenix, police kept people off the hurricane barrier while winds whipped at gusts of 55 miles per hour and sustained winds of 37 MPH hit the area. The harbor was considerably calmer than during last year’s visit by Tropical Storm Irene. Inland a bit, Walmart and Pizza Hut sustained damage to the buildings, and trees around town were knocked down, some on cars. Power was out to thousands in Fairhaven, but almost all had power restored by Tuesday evening. The Fairhaven Selectboard and Board of Public Works both held meetings on Monday night, with both boards saying they had important paperwork to sign. The Selectboard needed to sign paperwork for a bond for the Wood School project that was being picked up on Tuesday, storm or no. The BPW decided to shut off water and sewer for Seaview, Ocean, and Grandview, West Island and Wilbur’s Point. Robocalls went out several times on Monday advising residents of developments. Hastings Middle School was the designated shelter in Fairhaven, instead of the Wood School, which is being rebuilt. Only one person was taking advantage of it, but said he was very happy the option was there. I’m glad they did it.” During the day on Monday, the consensus among Fairhaven officials was that the storm was no different than a typical nor-easter. In other states, though, the storm was deadly, and caused billions of dollars in damages. Many are still without power, with no end in sight.
